What do I have?

Hi, I have something wrong with my computer and was hoping someone could help me. This is my first time here and I am not by any means computer smart.

Everytime I try and open internet explorer there is a popup that reads "Windows Host Process (Rundll32)" and it is trying to get permission to open.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This error can occur a couple ways. Seems to show up more in Vista.

1 – You have multiple version of rundll.exe on your system that is conflicting. The file is supposed to be in your ./windows/system32 folder.

2- You have a program in start up causing the issue. (Probably both related)
Easiest way to diagnose is to run msconfig and disable very thing in your start up. If there error goes away you know it is one of those programs. Then enable a few programs at a time until the error returns.

Quick tip – If you have NERO installed start with disabling that one. Seems to be a know bug.

I checked the msconfig and do not see it in the list.

I am running on Windows Vista and IE7.....

Follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested C:\MGlogs.zip file when you finish.

This will provide a bunch of logs containing a lot of information of your system. This information will also contain a list of startup items which may help us to see what is going on. If I find that this is a malware issue. I will move this thread back to the Malware Forum (where you originally started) and have you run some other procedures.

Send me a PM when you have attached this log as I don't always have time to check into the Software Forum.
