What does vsmon.exe do?

This is the program that is chewing up 98% of my CPU every 10 secs when I am online meaning I can't play games and surfing becomes a real nightmare.

What does it do? Is it safe to uninstall?

And does it have anything to do with using XFire as a gaming portal? When I use it the red light on my computer is brighter than a brothel window when the navy are in town!! That light comes on when my comp is having a good old think about things, so it's obviously studying very hard.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks mate for that.

But why now? I've been running ZA for years now with no problems. I even went mad earlier uninstalling that horrible Kontiki thing my wife inadvertently downloaded hoping it would clear the problem.

Now it turns out it's a program that's been happily ticking away in the background before that now has decided to come to the fore.

    Why?, I ask myself.

What other firewalls can be recommended other that good old ZA Pro? And are they as good?

    Cheers

On my laptop, vsmon.exe only uses 0.77 to around 5% every so often. There is no way it should be using up around 90%.

Maybe it would be an idea to uninstall your version of ZA, run CCleaner (or similar) and install the latest version (ZoneAlarm Free 7.0.483.000) at http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html

Look for kontiki.exe in processes, also look at your Zone log, something is pestering Zone. Did you update Zone recently?

Cheers to you and Cat. Yes my ZA has updated recently (running Pro version) and I have looked at log viewer and there is nothing in there at all!!!

I have now decided (unless you advise me otherwise) to ditch ZA and use Online Armor. It seems very highly rated. Higher than ZA even.

I changed from Zone awhile back due to issues with it, so until they work them out it might be a good idea to switch. I really liked Zone for years and paid for it, too bad about the direction they took IMO.

Just to be different, I've switched back to ZA (latest version). Like most folks I used it years ago, switched away when ZA was sold to another vendor and now am back again. No complaints so far. As I mentioned previously, no excess CPU usage by vsmon.exe. Bazza
