What happened here?

I went to the windows update site, and it told me there were two updates waiting.
A Nvidia display software update released on May 02 2003, and a Windows XP SP1 update. I dutifully downloaded and installed both, and restarted my PC. My display was reduced to 4 bit, and there was no option to change it in the appearance settings. I had to go to System Restore to get my old settings back. Now I have my old 16 bit setting back, but no updates. I am leery of downloading any updates until I find out why this happened.

I am running XP home on a Athlon xp2000 with a GeForce4 MX 440.
