In the winter time I keep my appartment 55 to 60 degrees Farenhiet, and 75-80 in the summer. What is optimal room temp?

I've noticed that my laptop runs better when I elevate it with drink coasters. I assume that it allows air to circulate underneath and cool it down.

Hi :), not being good with degrees F I find that my PC internal temperature rises and falls with room temperature. I find that 18C is about right for both PC and my own comfort. At 18C room temperature the PC gets to about 26C at its exhaust fan under normal use, ie not running 3D games. When my GPU kicks in the temp rises to about 29C - 32C which is still ok, but worth considdering that the actual temperature of the CPU and GPU will be greater. If your worried your laptop will suffer from the summer heat, treat it to a nice desktop fan gently wafting across it, it will cirtainly help. dont worry about colder temperatures, computers love to be cool just like we do :) just be carefull of condensation forming if the laptop feels very cold before turning it on, move it to a warmer room for about 30 minutes to minimise the risk, although i cant see that being a problem either. In winter my room with PC in gets VERY cold .. <15C and PC still starts nice and soon warms up :) Also worth noting is Humidity, Too Low a humidity and static electricity can soon start to gather and cause glitches, although i havent experienced it (my humidity levels range from 30% in winter to about 60% in summer) . I dont worry about it as its never been a problem for me. . But yes ur right about lifting the laptop, it does allow better air circulation :)

I keep my apartment cold in the winter. 18C is about 68F, I think.

Most server rooms are normally set around 65 degrees or lower.

Your laptop may have an intake fan on the bottom. I know mine does. That may be why elevating it a slight bit helps- It can draw more air and draw it more easily with a bit of elevation allowing for better airflow. Airflow in laptops is generally pretty bad.

That makes sense. The fan is on the side. But the laptop is warmer whe sits on a surface. Oddly, your own lap would heat it up.
