Currently in the UK 8mb or 10mb is available from many ISPs using ADSL, this seems to a be a recent development. Many ISP seem to have been upgrading from 2mb as most common to 8 or 10 mb.

My cable was recently upgraded to a 10mb connection although I still only get 512mb upstream. I htink they are worried about me hosting servers or something.

In the USA, it is currently, Verizon FIOS (signal comes on optic fiber) about 15Mb/sec.

    :D

There may be even more faster connections, which are used by Universities and research labs they will only acceble to the public aftrer many years even decades. We all know the current Internet was alos a research project.

If you are wanting the fastest possible connection then a load balncing router and several internet connections will make it faster however many internet connections you decide to have

U guys have 8Mb? Here (Greece) the highest personal conection is 2Mb. I am proud to say that I have such a connection. Or I was proud before reading about your DSLs  . Only schools and organizations have 8 or 10 Mbps in Greece.

the fasted connection i've seen so far is the one the local university has (osu) and their connection consists of dual 2 gb/s gateways directly to the internet....not only that but most of open sources projects are hosted on the local network which is all fiber channel 10 gb/s (osuosl). But i've seen their server rooms and if you want that type of connection....$$$$$$$$$$$, why you'd need a 4 gb/s connection to the internet...i don't know.

ISP top speeds in the UK are now around 24mb with BE as they are using ASDL2+ but the max speed would mean that you would be living next door to your phone excahange so many are getting around 15mb DL speeds.

If I had connection to the main backbone out of the building I'm in now I would be gettting 10gbs but I'm not! its used for grid computing Ocean and Earth models plus medical mapping or the body or cells.. mass number crunching, the one I have if working is 10mb DL 3mb UL, but this is limited to amount of users, the more logged on the lower the speed for general surfing etc, if dealing with my research work and data transfers it will be maxed.

but backbone speeds on fiberOp cables are hitting 40GBs with OC-768
