What is Thumbs.db?

I followed each step in removing malware as posted by chaslang on October 9, 2005, Except I did no disable system restore temporarily because I was not certain that I had gotten rid of all the malware on my computer. Also, I have not run Hijack This yet.

I did my best, but I am a newbie so I have some questions & comments:
When I ran Ccleaner it removed 477.4 MB of stuff.

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool found nothing.

    Ad-Aware SE removed 166 objects.

Spybot Search & Destroy found 5 problems which it fixed. Question: 1 was WindowsSecurityCenter.AntivirusDisable.Notify. Another was WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisable.Notify. Are these truly problems or are they part of Microsoft's windows program?

Microsoft Antispyware found 4 items. It recommended 2 quarantines & 2 removals, but I removed all 4.

I am attaching the bdscan1.txt and the activescan text files. Upromise is a college savings plan -- it pops up when I am making a purchase that could be made through Upromise for savings. I'm okay with that. SideStep is a travel fare finder.

I have 111 Thumbs.db files now on my computer. What program put them there? When I tried to delete one, I was warned that this was a system file -- I thought that I had better check with you before I deleted them.

My computer is running alot better -- not hanging when shutting down and not hanging when starting up.

What is your assessment of my computer's condition after looking at the TXT files I have attached?

    Thank you!

    Thank you D3m3nt3d.

I went into Add/Remove Programs and tried to remove Upromise remindU, but received the WJView error message "Could not execute Main: the system cannot find the file specified." So, I used Windows Explorer to find all files with Upromise in the file name. I found 7 files: a cookie in Temporary Internet Files, 2 IE history references, 2 HTML files, a subfolder in my Outlook Inbox, & Upromise.dbx located in Local Settings\Application Data\Identities.

I don't know why Upromise remindU still shows up in my Add/Remove Programs list.

Next, I searched for all files with SideStep. I found 4 and deleted all including SideStep.lnk.

I have now run Hijack This and I am attaching the log file.

One final question: BitDefender seems to be trying to act like an Anti-Virus program. Since I already use Norton Internet Security & Norton Anti-Virus, should I uninstall BitDefender?
