    Hi all,

Not so sure I have an infection or anything, but this morning when I started up Avira made mention of a start up process called WinVirCheck.exe and I've not heard of it before. I Denied it from starting just in case and I booted up fine.

From looking around the net I'm not sure if it's anything to worry about? I see it is C:\WINDOWS\WinVirCheck.exe

I'm wondering if I can delete this file?

I have just got a new C hard drive and am installing tons of my programs back, so I have no idea what installation it may have come from.

Thanks in advance if you know anything about this.

    :)

Not sure..but I suspect it may be related to the new xpanti-virus 2008 .....if you would like us to check your system Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Note:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Not experiencing any trouble with my system (that I can tell of). But am wondering about 2 things:
    C:\WINDOWS\WinVerCheck.exe
this showed up and I blocked it with Antivir Firewall yesterday AM. Interestingly, when I started up this morning, the warning about it did not pup up, but I still see it in my C:\WINDOWS folder.

In my searches yesterday and upon reding about how to properly manage startup items. I did find an entry in my Startup called WINotity.dll that is suspicious to me.

I also see something called winlogon.exe in my Processes in the Task Manager

    SuperAntiSpyware found nothing
    log is attached

    SpyBot Search and Destroy
    no threats were found

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Found 13 entries of Spyware.Banker

    Combofix
    Nothing seems to be found

MGTools logs attached in second post

Do you know what this is:
    C:\Program Files\GPLGS?

You can use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\sj664
    C:\4ce5300e04771816335670f27f
    C:\WINDOWS\NV1380920.TMP
    C:\WINDOWS\WinVerCheck.exe

Winlogon is a legit file....the other file in your startup is unknown to me. After deleting the above, reboot and see if it is still there.

Do you know what this is:
    C:\Program Files\GPLGS?

This is CutePDF a free PDF maker. It's full of post script files and font files.
    Here is info:
    http://www.cutepdf.com/
    http://www.urc.emory.edu/guidelines/CutePDF install instructions.pdf

You can use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\sj664

This folder has files to do with my HP printer setup. I will delete it and see what happens.

    C:\4ce5300e04771816335670f27f
This again looks to have some print driver DLLs or something like that in it.

    C:\WINDOWS\NV1380920.TMP
This process NVIDIA Networking Protocol Driver belongs to the software NVIDIA TCP/IP Protocol Driver. I will delete it and see what happens.

    C:\WINDOWS\WinVerCheck.exe
I will delete this as I have no idea what it is.

I made backups of all these folders/files and sent them to my external just in case.

    I'll report back.

    Hi again,

OK I booted up fine. Things print fine with HP, so I am assuming those were all temp installation files from when I installed the program

Startup entry called WINotity.dll is still present

WinVerCheck.exe was deleted and this hasn't seemed to affect my system.

All the other entries you suggested were deleted and everything seems fine so far.

    Can I uninstall SuperAntiSpyware?

So it looks like I was clean after all?

    Thanks!

Yes, you should be clean.....but let me know if you have any problems.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significan amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below

      * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.

    4. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    5. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    9. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I've done this and things seem fine. I seem to have lost a lot of setting such as my Firefox ones, but that's OK as i just reset stuff to the way it was.

    Thanks!
