What is wrong with you, Google?

It's been a while since I logged into my gmail account, I figured I'd log in and clean it out. When I went to log in, I realized I had forgotten my password. I thought, no biggie, I just did this with my forgotten Skype password. Well apparently, it is a biggie to Google.

I went through the forget password thingy and it asks me to put in my alternate address and I do and then it asks me a billion questions. "when was the last time you accessed this account?, when did you create this account?, etc" and you have to answer in month/day/year. Seriously? do they really expect people to remember the exact day they opened their account? I don't remember when I did any of that!

So finally I get to the end of all the questions and it says it will send the details to my alternate email. I check my alternate, expecting to see the basic "click this link and to change your password" (like I just did with Skype) and this is what it says.

What?!?! My credit card info???? and I have to wait 3 days for someone to "evaluate my information"?? for a password to an email account I barely use anyway?? Are they crazy? Were they smoking crack when they thought of this idea? :-D I joke but I'm also serious.

I understand trying to prevent someone from accessing an account that's not their own but this is a little much, no?? they act as if I'm trying to get the password to someone's bank account. You're losing it, Google.

Watch it, the last person that biyatched here about Google got canned. Their influence is far-reaching :-D

I agree, for the sake of an email account it is a little overkill, but they probably have a crater-full of attorneys telling them how to handle these things for the sake of liability.

You're right. Take pity on me all-mighty Google. I'm just a lowly peasant. :cry

:-D but seriously, it's an email account not Fort Knox.

Wow, the last time I forgot mine, they emailed it to my yeehaw account. Not giving my CC info to the Google.

Never noticed the cc message, but yeah, it is easier to rob a bank than retrieve a gmail password.

Kind of related. When I sign into my You Tube account they now want my real name, not my "hard to read" user name and I have to use a long email address to sign in. And, while I'm complaining, the check box to stay signed in has the tiniest (sp?) check mark in it by default. (Seems to keep me signed in anyways.)
Then, the next time I use Google, I'm signed in there. Why would I need to be signed in to Google???

You will defer to The Google. Instructions will be emailed to your Google inbox. Follow the instructions, or you will be Googled.

    :-D

Wow luckily I can remember my Gmail password as I use Outlook to manage that account over using the www, so can save my account settings, which is a plus at times when you have 6 email addresses, used for various things.

Never noticed the CC info before, but have seen them repeatedly as for a mobile number for account or password resurrection. Never added my mobile number to this service as less that things like that are out in the wild the better.

I had a similar thing happen trying to recover a Gmail password for one I set up for a game. I logged into that account once to activate the account and that was years ago. I inevitably said the heck with it and just left it. This is why I write my passwords down and store them off-site (off my HD in my machine).

@Sibeer-- Not sure if I read your post correctly, but if I did, you were asking why you needed to be signed into Goggle to sign into YouTube?
Google bought YouTube a little while back. If that is not what you were referring to then please disregard this section of my post. :)

Well I got back in, no thanks to Google, I figured since I'm kind of locked out anyway I might as well just start guessing passwords. :-D Password number 3 and I found the correct one. Thanks for nothing, Google! :p

I almost never sign in to you tube. I don't comment on videos, or leave ratings, etc, so there is no point to me. Especially now since you tube and Google merged. I just go to you tube, type my own user name in the search bar, find my page and play my playlists. :-D

Yeah, I knew about the buy out. It was pretty much a rhetorical question. I was being overly dramatic. For effect.:-D

It's also the account you use to access everything on your Android phone, including Google Play and Google Pay, both of which have payment info. With as much information as Google gather about their users these days, it's not surprising they have ramped up the security level to that of a bank...

Actually, I don't have an Android, don't use Google Play or Pay and hardly even use the email account. :p

In all seriousness, what you said makes sense for those that do use those things but they should know who does and who doesn't. After all they are the all mighty Google, they see you when you are sleeping :zzz and they know when you are awake :-D

It's nice to know you're better than all of us because you've never forgotten your own password. rolleyes

On the other hand..... you just announced all your password (formats) maybe you should change them now :-D

    Sounds like Santa Clause, LoL!;)

    From:- "You Better Watch Out":-

"He sees you when you're sleeping
    He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!"

    LOL

Guess I'm a bit old fashioned, but I just make a note of critical P/W's and write them down in a secure place I know I won't forget, with no info to connect as to what it is for, (except to me, of course). Not saying it's the best method, but it works for me. ~ Some, just need to be memorized without fail, for obvious reasons.;)

Activate special ability, FIREFOX FU! Tools>Options>Saved Passwords.

Seriously, upon discovering that, I don't worry about losing passwords any more.

But this feature of Firefox is relatively insecure, as are online password storing services, when compared to my system:

A text file in an encrypted container on my computer's hard drive, which in my case is automatically backed up to my file server.

For on-the-move use I have the encrypted container on a pen drive along with a PortableApps installation to decrypt it as necessary, and then erase the decrypted file when I have finished with it.

The only risks to this are someone guessing the password for the file container, but as long as that is secure (hint: over 18 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols) the risk is considerably lower than any online service or the Firefox password manager.

My system is even more secure. I don't keep it on a computer, but in my head.

  21. collinsl

    collinsl MajorGeek

That works, but my head is too stupid to remember 30-40 15+ character passwords that are auto-generated.

  22. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    The auto-generators remember them ;)

I honestly can't be the only one out there that distrusts password generators, can I?

  23. collinsl

    collinsl MajorGeek

Nope, but without personally identifiable information there is very little way that the password can be tied to a person or site.

@Other readers: If you don't trust password generators, name four random objects, put them into an easy to remember phrase & make an image from them. I.E. A horse putting a date into a blender whilst firing a blunderbuss. From this phrase you can make a password of:tting

    HorseDateBlenderBlunderbuss

which, whilst being dictionary words, are one string and are not used in any order next to each other. You could also modify it to include email addresses, thereby getting @ signs, full stops (periods) and other symbols, or twitter hashtags:

A malinois posting #dogfood on twitter to dog@doglovers.com

    giving a password of:

    Malinois#DogFooddog@doglovers.com

    there you go!

I don't mind a little password insecurity. The only ones it remembers are ones like forums where I only have to log in once in a long while. Banks, paypal, those are all kept in hard copy under a further level of encryption.

I just changed all my passwords to ChuckNorris. If anyone tries to hax my accounts, their keyboard gives them a roundhouse kick to the throat. :-D

You know, roundhouse kicks to the throat aren't very effective...(the shoulders and chin get in the way)

  27. Fred_G

Not when Chuck Norris is delivering said roundhouse kick. Note, I did not say a roundhouse kick was attempted, I said they get one in the throat... Kinda like how Chuck Norris does not go hunting, he goes killing, because hunting implies the possibility of failure. :-D:-D

When Chuck Norris applies a Roundhouse Kick, the shoulders and chin are simply bonus targets.
