I have just finished the malware removal guide process. I have a few files I would like to upload: runkeys.txt, newfiles.txt, activescan.txt, bdscan.txt, and hijackthis.log (I was unable to retrieve the counterspy.txt file because there was no option for me to "view"... it just closed). I believe I know how to upload, but bear with me... I really have no idea what I am doing with these threads. I understand I am going to need to post 2 threads (one with 3 files, the other with 2); however, I don't know what to title these threads, where to post these threads, or what information to include in my message. Furthermore, I don't even know how I will know when you have checked my logs. This may seem rather redundant, and may be spelled out in the instructions, but I am a little confused.

I think I may need to try a different approach, such as the about: blank and HSA removal instructions (I definitely have this pop-up in my quick launch toolbar that keeps telling me I have "many spywares detected... click here to download software to remove"), but I would like your advice on the details from my logs. Not much was detected in all the scans, but there were a few things. So could you please let me know where to post the two threads with the five attachments. I think I read something about not posting them in the message explaining the problem. I will wait for a response (that hopefully I will easily be able to retrieve), and post per your help.

    Thanks so much!!!

Just attach your logs in this thread. Don't worry about the titles. I doubt that you need to run the HSA removal instructions. Don't do them unless we ask you to.

You will know when we have analyzed your logs because we will post a fix in the thread.

And yes you should explain what problems you are having.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

    Uninstall the below software:
Crawler Toolbar <-- you unknowingly installed this when you installed Spyware Terminator which you already uninstalled.
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Note: Some of the items listed below may no longer be in you HJT log after doing the above. Just ignore and continue.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1CB20BF0-BBAE-40A7-93F4-6435FF3D0411} - C:\PROGRA~1\Crawler\Toolbar\ctbr.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: &Crawler Toolbar - {4B3803EA-5230-4DC3-A7FC-33638F3D3542} - C:\PROGRA~1\Crawler\Toolbar\ctbr.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpySweeper] "C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeperUI.exe" /startintray
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL
O8 - Extra context menu item: Crawler Search - tbr:iemenu
    O18 - Protocol: tbr - {4D25FB7A-8902-4291-960E-9ADA051CFBBF} - C:\PROGRA~1\Crawler\Toolbar\ctbr.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Things appear to be running great! That stupid pop-up is finally gone!!! Thank you, thank you! I didn't have any problems with these last steps. I will attach three of the four logs here, and add another thread with the fourth log. I will wait for your reply before disabling system restore; however, I am not sure about that step... should the "turn off system restore" box be checked or unchecked at this point? Currently my box is NOT checked. When I was doing the Malware removal procedure I got kinda hungup on that. I felt like I had it backwards. I don't know, but as of now, the box is not checked. Is that right or wrong? Finally, I have been having this issue for about a year now. I took my computer to the Geek Squad because it was all messed up, I ran this System Mechanic program, and immediately my computer lost it's start button, and toolbar at the bottom of the screen, and a whole bunch of other problems. The Geek Squad fixed that for me; however ever since then, whenever I open an internet page, a second blank page will open with it, and before I know it I will have like 20 open internet explorer windows... all blank. And, sometimes when I click on certain links on internet pages a window will open that says something like "you have referenced a token that doesn't exist" and then 50 blank internet explorer pages will open. I then have to close group and start all over. Do you have any idea what could be causing this? I wasn't impressed with the Geek Squad (or their prices) so I never took it back, and have just been dealing with it, but it kinda drives me crazy. Thanks for everything, I will wait for your reply. Michelle

You're logs are clean but you just need to delete the below folder. You may not be able to see it though because you undid the steps we asked you to do in step 2 of the READ ME which is actually not necessary.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Arlene\Application Data\Sunbelt Software

The Turn off System Restore checkbox should be have been unchecked (i.e. System Restore was still enabled) while running the process. Contrary to some sites, we feel it is better to toggle it after your malware has been removed rather than before. Our logic is that if you mess up anything while trying to remove malware, an infected restore point is still better than no restore point at all.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
