I don't even know if this is a hardware issue or a software issue.

Trying to look at cd's made with my old computer the new computer tells me,

    Dear Customer,

You are currently trying to read a disc in the Mt. Rainier format (CD-MRW).
You are seeing this message, instead of the contents of the disc, because
your system currently does not support the CD-MRW format.
To enable you to add CD-MRW support to your system we have developed a
complimentary software tool, the InCD EasyWrite Reader.

To download the latest InCD EasyWrite Reader just visit our website at
    http://www.nero.com

You can also install the InCD EasyWrite Reader provided on this disc by
    clicking here.

However, the InCD EasyWrite it's trying to provide won't install because it says there is a compatibility issue and claims Microsoft has the solution. Microsoft directs me to a page where I can buy Nero 9 for $80.00.

Searching Nero I find InCDReader 5.9.4.0. When I try to install that it tells me it finds Nero 6 already on the computer and that I will have to let it go ahead and uninstall it to proceed.

Doing that totally botched it up so the DVD drive wouldn't work at all and I had to go back with System Restore.

    So,

what reads a cd writtten in CD-MRW?

are you just letting it auto run? are you running xp? can you go to My Computer, then select the drive, right-click and choose explore.

if it's xp, do you have service pack 3?

    I'm using Vista Home Edition.

When I put in a cd it puts up the page quoted above. When I look at it with y Computer it says '0 bytes free of 1.28 MB' and shows,

    FILES
    AUTORUN.INF
    desktop.ini
    ICON.ICO
    OPENHTM.EXE

In the files it has the page quoted in a variety of languages and a copy of EasyWriteReader.exe

When I got rid of my old computer I copied all the junk I wanted to keep onto these cd's and now this is all I see.

    Hi

The UDF Reader in INCD Reader from nero should work fine, but indeed you would have to uninstall Nero 6 beforehand as its not 100% compatible with Vista.

But something to try is if you pop the CD/DVD in the drive and it autoruns to open, then cancel out of that and use Windows Explorer to search for the files, open Computer and single click the CD drive in the left side menu list of drives and folders and drill down to see if any other folders are available, if so copy and paste your data into a new folder on the C: Drive (as Vista natively supports UDF but may not like the autorun from an old UDF packt writing app)
