I'm looking for free, or very cheap, software to convert them to mp3s. My requirements are, no spyware, very small footprint, clean install. No iTunes.

Google brings up a number of results. I tried a freeware app called Bonk or something and it didn't work.

    What should I use?

You can use this free program and it should be fine except that it doesn't remove DRM and doesn't convert DRM protected music. So, if the music is covered with DRM, you'll have to remove it first by using this free application. That should do it! Tons more info can be found at this link. There are several paid programs that will remove DRM and convert the music also: Noteburner, TuneBite, SoundTaxi, and others....
