What should it cost to weld a new charging port into a laptop?

Any one have a clue. The repair shop said it would be cheaper to buy a new laptop. I can't believe that.

My notebook tech in Houston charges $85 wholesale; I mark it up to $125 retail.

With this being said, two caveats apply:

    * If the PC uses a power adapter that uses a wired modular port (not soldered) and there is damage to the plastic slot that holds it inside the case (somewhat common on Toshibas), the price will go up - either for a replacement outer shell or getting creative with a glue gun to hold it in place.

    * If the old power adapter jack shorted out, there is a chance (based on my experience, about 25%) the motherboard was also damaged. There is no way to find out until the new power jack is installed. Be sure the repair shop won't charge you full price for replacing the jack if this turns out to be an issue.

    Hope this helps. :)

We always charged two hours of labor at 60 an hour. Plus the little board if it was needed, but generally its a full tear down of a laptop so despite the soldering being a "little job" the price is usually pretty high. Plus generaly once it fails it will fail soon again, hence the recommendation for a new laptop.

Hi Tim, this is three power socket repairs I have arranged. Sorry for the long post rolleyes
We had an old Acer fixed about 4 years ago and cost <$100 and was just a replacement socket soldered in place and a dab of epoxy resin. A bit of a rough job with some epoxy spilt outside on the case but the repair worked :)
A Samsung (model with the magnesium alloy case) and that was fixed under warranty by Samsung even though warranty had expired two months earlier. They came out to site and replaced the motherboard at no charge. Great service. :-D
Recently one of our employees asked if I could drop off their son's 18 month old HP Pavilion to our service depot. They said because it's a HP it wasn't worth fixing and to bin it so then I took it to the local HP Service Agent and they said it would be too expensive to fix and wasn't worth it but because the display was undamaged and the case unmarked they offered to swap it for a factory refurbished Pavilion for $300. I asked them to ghost the HDD over to the new one but they wanted an extra $75 to do this so I cracked the sads and took it back to our workshop, removed the HDD and made an image then got the employee to go back to HP and do the swap for $300. Bloody expensive fix just for a broken power socket :mad

It seems to me that a lot depends on the brand and that brand's attitude to service as to whether it will be fixed or scrapped.

    Hope you found this interesting.

Yeah the biggest cost is the teardown it's quite a big job and all kinds of things can go wrong so shops have to cover themselves.

You could try meeting them in the middle and pull the motherboard out then just deliver it to them and ask for the port to be soldered, that's just a 10min job then.

Well, guys, this is my daughters laptop. So............................... she was just guessing!!! She actually has no idea what is wrong other than it won't start up. Idiot child. She called one repair shop and they said it might be as simple as needing a new battery. But she doesn't want to pay the $20 diagnosis fee. Go figure.

If the charging light doesn't come on when it's connected tell her to take the adpter to be tested or she can pick up a cheap Chinese adapter but they suck, there's only about 10 components inside. I have one powering my laptop right now I dropped the first and it blew up :-D It was only £15 one quarter the price of a genuine HP.

I'm definitely in new laptop territory now mines falling apart so didn't want to spend any money on it.
