I have two each 1 terabyte external hard drives. I use one of the drives to save all my patterns, such files as jpeg, png. pdf, cdr, cdl, svg, dxf, etc. I want to use the second external hard drive as storage (backup) in case something happens to the first hard drive. I would like the program to save new information instead of copying the entire drive every time. The program can be free or purchase.

I use Microsoft SyncToy to 'Echo' my personal files/folders to my backup drive. My backup needs are simple and SyncToy is a simple option. Easy to figure out how to use and you can either manually sync as needed or set up scheduled times to sync.

I use a sync program too, SyncbackFree. It works well enough but the UI can confuse at first. There is a huge choice of sync backup programs so you really need to try a few, but if you are using 8, 8.1 or 10 you might also want to give the built-in File History a whirl. This really is a set it and forget it option and saves all versions, not just the latest.
