What the heck are these folders?

I upgraded this machine to IE7 a couple months ago and have been usiing it lightly. Now that I'm back on it the laptop is running very sluggish...

I have my HD partitioned into three drives:

    C:
    E: for backup files
    F: Scratch disk for Photoshop.

I looked at my backup drive and found a couple folders I didnt recognize:

    1. 1f4628583739a9b3d8b112f8ec08ccd6. This folder has a subfolder called Update.

    2. d7abfb8767734c212256692aaf378ddd This folder only contains one file, called msxml4-KB927978-enu That file is attached.

Is this malware? I was thinking of eliminating this partition as I dont need it on a separate HD anymore, but i don't want to mess this up. Did IE7 install in the wrong location?

I hope I posted this in the correct forum. If not, let me know where I should move it to.

    Thanks!

These are folder created by Windows updates. Normally they are removed when the install works properly. If you are having problems/failures with Windows Updates (like does it keep trying to download the same updates) then these files will remain.

    This is not malware!

Can I remove these folders? Or do I need to keep them and move them to a backup file location?

You can remove them but you need to determine why you are getting them. As I stated, it would seem to indicate failed/incomplete Windows Updates. Are you noticing problems like that? Do the same updates keep trying to download? You will have to work these issues in the Software Forum. If you suspect that malware is causing this problem (and I tend to doubt it) you could run all this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support and attach the logs. We could then help you either remove any malware or rule it out from being the problem.
