    Hi all,
i will be sending my dell inspiron 6400 out for repair in a couple weeks, and i am try to figure out what to back up and how to do it. I am a student and have no money to spend on back up programs. Dell advises that i back up my computer as they will probably restore it to its original settings. I was hoping to make a multi-disc DVD back up, but i am not sure how.
i am running Win XP and i only have about 1Gb of free space currently, although i can free up more if needed)
any suggestions / free back up programs??
    thanks,

First you need to back up all of your important documents (since you are a student all your papers and things that you need for classes)....If you have a lot of music that you have purchased from iTunes (or anyother site) it is important to back that up as well...If you keep financial records on software that would be a good idea as well

CD's/DVD's/USB memory sticks are a good source of backing things up :)

    Hope this helps

    Hi

Basically backup all your important docs as highlighted above, either to USB, CD/DVD, and use your normal CD burning software for this, if you dont have any then this is a good free one http://www.majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html

Things to think of to backup:

All important documents and files ( including pictures and ANYTHINK you can thing of that you do not wish to loose, do double check all folders and mainly Documents and Settings, you can burn this whole folder to CD/DVD if you wish )

    Internet Favorites ( normally located in C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Favorites )

Emails and Email settings, how to backup and restore http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_oe_backup.htm

You can also use the inbuilt backup utility as well in XP http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx
