What to do with an older computer? 633mhz celeron w/256mb memory, windows 2000 os and 66mhz fsb...is it feasible to upgrade cpu to pIII or do I just forget the whole thing since the computer that I'm currently using, will probably be obsolete before I get a response to the question!! Just looking for some pithy advice...

It'd probably be easier and cheaper just to buy a new computer. If the cost of upgrading your computer is 50% or more of the cost of buying a new one, I'd say it's not worth it. Unless of course you use it for web browsing and email, and not much else. Then you can maybe get away with adding more ram to it.

I have just fixed an old computer like that for a friend,it had very poor perfromance even when surfing the internet,it made my broadband connection look like dial up,alot of sites now are so much more detailed than when the computer was first made it really bogs it down, there is no point upgrading in my opinion, for the price of the parts you could get a used one fully built and ready to go that would show a vast improvement over your current computer, upgrading it will show very little performance increase, whatever you upgrade another part will be slowing it down, the memory, vid card, fsb or cpu just MHO :)

with the price of somewhat older amd and intel chips you can find chip and board combos for very little . Even a 1.8 gig celeron or sometyhing along those lines would be a lightyear leap from where you are now.If you can put 1 together with no problems that would be the way to go :) if not a cheap dell or similar prebuilt system would be your best bet

Wipe it, install Linux, and play around to your heart's content... :) Buy a decent machine, set up the linux box as a firewall, or print server, or mail server, or whatever. Just explore and have fun! :D
