My last trip was to see "The world's fastest Indian" starring Anthony Hopkins.
Just goes to prove you are never too old if you really want to do something badly enough.

A great movie. A great story. Even my #1 (cynical) son liked it.

Thank You For Smoking was the last movie I saw in theatres, really enjoyed it. Clever script; provides a look at the tobacco industry that most people aren't used to.

The other night to see XMen3. I try to go to the movies often with my friends, almost always an enjoyable experience, except when there are annoying idiots in the theatre, which is a risk I'm willing to take. There's just nothing like seeing it on the big screen...

Oh, I really want to see Thank You For Smoking. I hear it's really great...

Last flick live was Flight 93 with some friends.

@Baz: World's Fastest Indian got "limited release" back in February in the States, and I either missed it or it didn't play near me. I heard about it and managed to see it anyway, and loved it. Quirky and not for everybody, but when it comes out on DVD I definitely plan to add it to my collection. I loved it.

Last movie I saw in a theatre was Naked Gun. That was a long, long time ago.

I prefer to buy or rent a DVD, especially with the absurd prices theatres charge.

the changes in movie production these days vs 10 years ago are amazing. Thanks to DVD movies are out on dvd 3-6 months after release whereas it used to be even over a year before you saw a movie come out on video... then again after 3 months or so no one wants to play a movie in theaters and the earnings would be insignificant unless you were at a drive in or a theater that charges like a buck to get in

Yeah, I said it was a long time ago.

before my wife and I got married. .
she didnt want to see it. .suprised we got married after that, actually
I cant believe we still are. . especially after she has seen more of a geek I am

maybe she has someone else to entertain her?

    hmm. . .

I am looking forward to the new "comic book" films coming soon

I think it was War of the Worlds . . . we may have been to a more recent picture but I can't remember what it would have been. They say memory is the first to go - which is a mercy. For when you start losing other stuff, you won't remember you had it in the first place!

I don't go to theaters either, but I find I am dragged there about once a year for something (my wife is obsessed with harry potter)... stuff like that. Anyways, everytime I go its a worse experience. Its 85% high school kids, the theaters are just dirty and disgusting, the kids talk/laugh/joke around during the movie, and it costs $10 for a large coke. F*ck that! I think I;ll wait a couple months and Netflix it.

I hear ya there! Last time I went it cost $4.50 for a medium bottle of freakin' water!!!!

We have a $1.50 theater here which runs movies which have been out 3-6 months. Yeah, you could get them on DVD by then, but sometimes it's nice to step out and have a change of scenery, and the kids love it. We buy munchies and drinks in the Dollar Store and sneak them in ;) so 4 people go for under $10!! :D

First one I saw was Willow, last one was Matrix revolutions, looked amazing on the big screen, really got the blood pumping

One thing you cant really do in a cinema is get toasted as you miss half the movie going to the lav,Hard for me to sit through a film without alchohol, its a fine balance not enough and the film is dull, too much and you cant remember what the film was about  :)

I think the last movie in the cinema was King Kong, then The Last Indian recently - great film for bike aficionados. It was the original "Biker's bike", long before H.D.'s. Indians are a real collectors item now.

My grandfather had a 1918 Indian, with a side car. Would get a friend in the side car, whip the side car off the ground in a corner and balance it in the air, then blast down the straight with the car up and the rider screaming/swearing at him. :D

LOL. So do I. Prior to Flight 93 my last trip was to see Narnia at Christmas time with my sister. Prior to that was the last Star Wars flick with a friend. I don't get there much either, and usually when someone else wants to go.

I get out alot, but never really initiate going to the movies so like you GT, its when someone else wants to go I will, prefer most of the time to watch when on DVD with bottle of wine or beer and snacks... saves having the annoying bugger who is either texting or yammering on throughout the film... damm well hate people who goto movies and just are not taking any notice of the film.

(shrug) Vote with your wallet. If you're going to the theater, either eat and drink ahead of time, or smuggle something in. There's always water in the lobby, if you're dying of thirst. Or just wait for the DVD. That's how capitalism works. If nobody bought their junk food, they'd have to lower their prices. Of course, depending on the overall overhead, they may have to raise ticket prices, which are already pretty high. Those inflated food prices help pay a substantial part of the bills.

With the current trend in shorter release times for DVD, rental, and Pay-Per-View, and more people just waiting for those, coupled with ever-higher prices, some people are starting to seriously consider whether the traditional movie theater will be disappearing, and end up as scarce as the live-stage theaters are today.

  36. Majin Joku

i have to say that the best bet is to go to a good ol DRIVE IN. Bring your own food from home or somewhere else, that and their prices normally aren't bad for munchies if you really need em, plus its usually 5-8 bucks a head and you get 2 or 3 movies in the comfort of your car, so you can listen in, smoke a cigarette, bowl (you know whatever you prefer) and relax...

  37. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Yes, I mainly go to the cinema when friends ask to go, and especially, as some access to free tickets. Some movies are only really worth seeing on the big sceen and sound. King Kong was like that, i.m.o.

The food, I usually bring my own, or simply wait until it's over and go elsewhere. I don't like paying 5-7 bucks, just for a bucket of popcorn.

As for Drive-ns - sadly here, there are only two drive-ins left, mainly for the teenager crowd - in a city of two million people.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

If you've got one (or more?) drive-ins close to you, you're lucky. Drive-ins peaked in the 1950s, and have been declining since, partly due to higher quality on screen and MUCH better sound, plus better comfort indoors. At the end of 1997 there were only 815 SCREENS, (fewer theaters, as some had doubles, showing on both sides), and in 2003 they were down to 432 theaters nationwide (in the U.S.).

    Yeah, Drive-Ins are pretty good.

There's one nearby, that's if it's still open. Most have closed down unfortunately.

I don't think it's because of demand, but because the land is worth a lot more to developers.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

LOL. Of course, you'd know better than anybody around here. :) I should haved said scarce as the drive-ins. With the number of mega-theaters with many screens, there are fewer old-style single screen movie theaters surviving these days; they just can't compete well with the big boys. Many of those old theaters started out as live stage, many of them much more beautifully decorated than the current plain boxes with seats, and some of them have been re-converted back to their original purpose, or at least dual-purpose. They're still not in every neighborhood, but they're definitely out there. And music and bands will always demand a live stage for performance.
