I'm not sure what I'd do. Probably quit my job, go back to school and get an MA like I've wanted, buy a nicer place, upgrade my computer, and then invest most of what was left. Spend, say a few million right off, then give myself an allowance of sorts on it so that I could live off of it rather than wasting it.

I'd buy myself a huge house, and a few cars for when I am one day old enough to drive them. Ermm, New guitar and computer. Thats about it really but once I'd bough everything I wanted I'd keep a few million, give all my friends and family a decent share and whatever was left over would go to charity :)

Pay off all my immediate family's mortgages, loans, car payments; buy my husband a new pick-up; probably work part-time so I could have spare time to help those who need help in my community; donate more to charities I support.

    Take a vacation.

Firstly make a giant gold suit , which would allow me to tower above everyone else. Then , I would invent a laser system so I could open tins of beans and heat up food really fast. I would then learn to teleport.
Im guessing this would take a week or so. I would then make a giant robotic horse to ride around upon and laugh at people.

    Cmon guys - be imaginitive.

But seriosly ; probably what most people would do. Just enough to live comfortable , donate a lot to charity and pay off the bills of my freinds and family.

Oh and a giant gold suit ;)

Property, more property, family property....A box of carpentry pencils(or 2) since they shade drawings well. A fish tank house, well glass with fish in the walls. It would include plants la dee da dee da.....
Mostly though, a tree house that would put Swiss Familly robinsons treehouse to shame. I always wanted one of those. The house would suspend around the trunk of the tree and is just tooo hard to explain in words, though they built a few earthquake proof buildings in the same way in the mid 80's..
OOhh Tools...every darn tool I or you can think.
    And....

    Well, thank you. :D

That's actually my greatest wish for something like that. Would pay off my house, likely get a better TV and upgrade my puter, but my "wants" are pretty modest. My house and car aren't impressive, but are just fine. But it would be nice to play tourist some, see some of the sights I haven't seen, and visit a whole lot of friends and family that don't live near here. Plus would be fun to play Santa Claus a bit and make some other people's eyes light up.

Every now and then a nice thread comes along to let you know that the people in here are really decent folks. I would give it away, put some in stock, and then go back to work like I have been, keep going to school, except I would go all the way for a Masters. I would pay off everything my parents owe, set them up nice. Put away more for the kids college/schooling. And definitely start my own web company to help those who are less fortunate get involved with technology to help them have a better chance at a solid future.

Now, I would have to have a 1965 Ford Mustang, 10 huge servers for my aforementioned web company, and then give the rest to my girl who is much better with money than I am.

And live pretty much the same as I do now. Sitting shirtless in front of the computer at 11:21pm debating whether to drink a cup of tea, or a glass of water.

    Good night, good folks.

$265 million? To be honest, I wouldn't have much use for it for personal needs/wants, beyond the first few million$.

After setting myself up for life, and those that I know, the rest I'd use for charity, or educational/cultural stuff for the public. This city and country is lacking in really good Science Museums and such, for example, which not only educate, but make people realise science, technology, history etc., can actually be enjoyable. Encouraging a new generation of thinking people would be a good investment, apart from the regular forms of charity, i.m.o.

Buy my own island. Add a waterfall if one isnt there already. House would have a bowling alley, shooting range and model airplane airport integrated into the real landing strip. Buy a big airplane and boat, hire a crew to maintain and operate them. Sit on my island and do MajorGeeks work from the waterfront. Occasionally go to land to observe the "little people" ;)

First off, I'd buy myself a nice house on an island in the Pacific Ocean. They're nice and warm, and there's many islands there. Next, buy myself all kinds of electronics and get an OC-128 connection (you'd get pings to servers for games at like 1!). Pay off my friends and family's debts. Then, give the rest to charity.

Oh, and I'd buy a pet llama.

    Gotta have llamas.

I'd fund a huge project to make technology to help people in disasters. Do research into how to make emergency communications equipment from commodity hardware, and how to filter water completely effectively using the minimum of resources. Help less wealthy towns and cities prepare for disaster by providing systems to deal with it (better ones, anyway), and providing inhabitants with emergency equipment like GPS and emergency radios. Probably not enough for everyone in the world, but once a few cities have done it, others should catch on.

Not to mention start all of my "stored ideas" - there are a lot of them, and they're in a big folder with the piece of paper and an envelope containing the same thing but posted to me by recorded delivery ;)

If there is anything left over for me, I'd make the coolest looking geekout room in existence, power station sized plasma screen, at least 9 extra monitors and a chair with built in keyboard and mouse :D Maybe even one of my User Interface inventions to go with.

And I'd need a mantion with a racetrack down the road. With a garage with a few superbikes, a Porche or 3, Caterham 7 and an aerial atom :D

    Actually ;)

The speed of your conenction would have less to do with latency than ALL of the routes between you and the server.

  36. Rikky

yeh,you need to create your own servers with the games you want to play on and hook directly into them,or upgrade the entire telecom network, having higher ping than the other players gives you an unfair advantage anyhoo which takes the fun out of it

What about a lan heaven?rooms and rooms with all your favourite games,no latency, you could even make some more money:D

All the people that are saying they would give it away, I'd love to see them do it.

It's easy to say when you don't have it.

Most people that win the lottery don't give to charity, so either this place is full of saints, or most wouldn't really do it if they won.

Everyones tryna trick mother fate into thinking they deserve to win and will do good with the money, once you win though its all yours,I can imagine peoples logic switching to "I bought the ticket, therefore its all mine,I'm rich I tell you, stinking rich, muhahahahah!" :D

ha! that would be way too long of a post.. but I promise I would give ATLEAST 10% of it to help other people / start my own charity where i know the money is going too. 26.5 million could help alot of people.. try to start a campaign for free health / dental insurance for the poor? try to fix the problem with global warming and better gas alternitives? who knows.. i would have the have the money first..

Insomniac - personally I think that I can give more than just money. Which is why I'd use it to fund a project to help people directly.

That said, most people who win the lottery have a sudden bout of greed when they have all that money - which is probably why they don't give any of it away. Equally, it depends on how much they win. If you won £4 million you would probably buy a house, pay off your current mortgage and then you'd have enough to spend on kids till they grow up, and that'd be pretty much it. That's after you've paid tax on it, which would almost cut your winnings in half.

Don't forget...If you won 256 million, and decided to take it in one lump sum....you would actually get a more realistic number of something like 150-175 million!! But needless to say, that is still a hellacious sum of dough!!!!

Personally...after setting up my family and friends, I would give a jaw dropping chunk to St. Jude, then set up a foundation for deaf and hard of hearing children, so that the poor kids can get the help they need (Hearing Aids & Tutoring) in school and everyday coping with life!! The foundation has been a life dream of mine...provided I can come up with the money to start something that is significant enough and can feed on itself and keep going for years to come!!!!

If I won that much!!! I'd flaunt it in front of my rich sister and her creep husbands face while I gave money to everyone except them.

My kids would have big fat trust funds, my friends would all own nice homes, dependable cars, and have clean credit reports, and ahh - did I say flaunt the $$$ in front of my greedy rich sister and her creepy husband!:p yeah - okay... that's about it- charity begins at home.

  46. Phantom

Since I already spend a fair chunk of my income and time and effort helping out rather less fortunate families, it wouldn't require a great change in my mentality to do it on a larger scale. And I'm the first to admit I'm not a saint, LoL! Making money is pretty easy – sadly parting with it is even easier.

But yeah, point taken, most Lottery winners, or people that win big sums of money though gambling, usually end up more miserable and broke than they were before they won. Guess there's certain amount of greed factor, and scoring something for nothing in the first place to gamble, buy the Lottery, or Lotto tickets. Otherwise they’d just give their weekly Lottery money to charity in the first place, right? ;)

    - Okay I confess I'd help more than just my friends but, my family and friends would come first. I'm pretty sure I'd be left with about half the dough to just be a philanthrapist. That would mean medical and educational research & assistance for kids who need it. But, my sister and her rotten hubby still would not get a dime! :p
