That's the CPU I have in my old Acer laptop running Windows 8.1 SpeedFan gets worried and starts displaying the fire symbol if it gets to 50C or above, but at what point should I get worried? How high can get that CPU get without coming close to being damaged or causing damage?

[quoteWhat's An Above-average Temperature[/quote]Hmmm, never heard it asked that way. Typically, we are asked what is acceptable or what is too hot.
Understand that is a setting in SpeedFan yelling at you, not your processor. If your processor was getting too warm, it would throttle back in speed all on its own to prevent over heating BEFORE potential damage can occur.

Look here. Note the maximum Tjunction temp allowed at your processor's die is 100°C. So your 50°C is still on the cool side. You need to change the threshold setting in SpeedFan, or use a more reliable HW monitor. I use and recommend Core Temp to monitor CPU temps in real time.

For the record, while an arbitrary number, I start to think about getting worried when my CPU temps sit above 60°C for more than a few seconds at a time. And typically, that is just a reminder to me to clean my air filters.

Great, thanks for the recommendation. I'll download Core Temp.
