having found files in DOS for the C drive I have several files that could be Kernel32 files (I need to rename to kernel32 to get my windows working ) but I do not know what a kernel32 file contains -- I think it is DLL's but what does the file have in it ? 1 line of code or "looks like" would help me to the file ...
    Thanks Kevin

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do, but:
On my XP SP2 Home edition I have 2 kernel32 files:
    KERNEL32.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\I386 (it's a backup)
    kernel32.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32

To my knowledge those are the only Kernel32 files you should have, and why would you want to rename them? If the kernel32.dll file is corrupt you should use the CD to replace or repair them, I believe.
If your problem is Malware related you should post in the Malware Removal Forum AFTER you've Read and Run: 'READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support' http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
