What's in a Sempron?

Ok, I 've read the specs on the Sempron/Semp0rn.
Can someone tell me exactly what its purpose is in life?
From what I understand, it is an Athlon XP core, still in the same socket A/462 form, but under a different name.
It's still built with the same 0.13 technology, still in the same form, and still at the same/comparable range of speeds.
What, aside from a new name to tantalize buying public, does the Sempron offer?

 

Sempron is the new BUDGET processor. Its use is for non-demanding PC users who simply need a computer for web browsing and word processing and the likes.

think Duron with some minor improvements. It is clcked slower than its T-bred or Barton counterparts, and does not perform as well by any means.

 

From what I've heard it will be basically exactly the same as the current Athlon XP's, only "cheaper".

you're correct Goldfish, in that some of them are essentially a recycled core with a new name, however if you take a look at a review between the three 2500+ chips (Barton, Mobile, and Sempron) you'll see that it IS dulled down a bit http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-239-1.htm

The XP's are still avaible, a couple of local computer shops are out of the XP 2500 bartons, and dont forsee getting anymore, but still avaible online.

 

My limited understanding is the Sempron is just the next evolution of the Duron, and is in direct challenge to the Celeron.

There are two versions, one based on Socket A, and the other on Socket 754.

Some tests have shown the Sempron neck and neck with the Thoroughbred Athlon, while others using content creation benchmarking like Photoshop, have showed it just marginally faster!
