Internet Explorer is a bit of a security hole. It will allow spyware to be installed on your machine. This may not be a problem if you stay up to date with your antispyware apps.

Firefox, however, DOES block most spyware (worst I've ever got while using it is silly little cookies). It also supports tabbed browsing (open multiple pages in on browser window), and has inbuilt search engines. Also, it is open source, which for the advanced user means you can code extensions for it, or modify the build to you taste.

Firefox IS the way to go. Really. And if you believe that internet explorer is better, than consider this: in november 2006 (IIRC) IE 7 will be released. This version will include tabbed browsing, inbuilt search engines and will block spyware....hmmm....if IE is better than FF, why would they steal all FF's ideas?

    You should definitely visit www.mozilla.org

IE is has more vulnerabilities to spyware and what not then Firefox or other browsers like Opera. Firefox is also faster. Since switching to Firefox my spyware count is WAY WAY down. I've never tried Opera. I say try em and see what you think

I didnt say that IE was better i was saying that its to your own taste and firefox is a different interface and old sticks in the mud like me cant change from ie because i am so used to the interface.

Alright first of all, I wasn't addressing your post in any way. I'm sorry if I offended. It wasn't an attack by any means.

Second, there are only superficial differences in the interface between Firefox and IE, aside from the added features that FF has. What's more, Firefox's interface is completely customizable, and you can go so far as to get themes that will make FF look like IE. You really should give it a second chance yourself, Funky Munky.

IE has too many bugs and vulnerabilities that are being patched one by one. Sometime around June Microsoft will release IE 7.0 but until then I would use Firefox.

With the many extensions Firefox offers now days, it's simply the easiest and best way to surf. Not only does it have great extensions it has the most security for secure surfing. You still can be infected with Firefox but not as easy as IE.

Remember, any browser that uses IE for its guts has the same vulnerabilites as IE. And anything that uses Active X components is a vulnerability waiting to happen.

    Hello Earl,
I have used both Internet Explorer 6.0 and recently started also using FireFox.

The guys are right when they say that FireFox is completely customizable. If the interface difference concerns you, you could customize it to look almost exactly like IE, and it allows you to move and remove features. I also understand that it does a much better job filtering out the spyware. Because I have not had a lot of problems with spyware (that I know of anyway), I think that a good anti-virus software and frequent system scans will protect you even if you have a more vulnerable browser.

With all that said, I do have some concerns (and another question, which I always seem to be asking around here) about FireFox. First, I have found that pages do load differently. If you are used to pictures immediately appearing upon a page load, there is a difference. With FireFox the image rolls slowly downward as it loads before fully appearing. The other concern is that if you already have another browser installed before downloading FireFox, you will be prompted to import your files from the other browser. My question to the guys is, if you choose to do this, does this remove the files out of the other browser, or simply copy them into FireFox?

No, you don't have to remove any software or browsers before installing FireFox. I know some people that have four browsers installed, so I think you could put in as many as you want.

You can get IE way of rendering pages in Firefox Tom K. One of the famous "tweaks" in Firefox is to set "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" to 0 instead of default 250. Means FF will spit out page elements ASAP not wait like IE does. On some pages it might feel like action happen faster but it looks terrible - and some say total load time actually increases! So try use a higher value, like 750 or 1000. Much smoother, not slower. Think it might be even more noticable if you use page manipulating stuff like Adblock but not sure.

Put this in user.js file which must be in profile folder. Change value to whatever feels good.

    user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 750);

Or you could install an extension like Fasterfox. Just turn off its enhanced prefetching which might be troublesome. Firefox has build-in prefetching but Fasterfox goes a bit further. Opposite most other "tweak" tools and guides it only has settings which actually do something.

Almost anything can be tuned, turned on/off - will end up being your personal browser not Firefox. Think Firefox lovers should focus on that not IE security issues.

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

As said above, just install the new browser.
Keep in mind, for Windows Updates, you'll have to use IE.

SItes not displaying properly isn't because of FF. These sites are coded specificlly for IE which is a W3C non-compliant browser.

IE relies on ActiveX, which is what makes it so vulnerable. It's also targeted a lot more.

I mainly use Opera now, and find it a vast improvement over FireFox.

Personally, I can't see what the big deal about FireFox is.

It may be great compared to IE, but just about anything is.

I find Opera faster and more user friendly, and the best bit is you don't have to install extensions.

If anyone is going to use IE, at least have SP2 and any critical patches installed, as well as basic security softare.

I agree with all the security flaws that IE has had and I've been away from IE for quite a while when Netscape was big then had to go back when Netscape was getting worse.

I switched again to Firefox before it was version 1, and I've loved that for a long time and use that primarily. I'm glad that Insomniac mentioned the Active X in IE that's not in Firefox (unless you want to add that as an extension which I think doesn't work too well, but that was a while ago).

I've also liked Opera since it switched to being freeware because I've tried Opera ages ago when it was shareware and loved it then. I've even looked at Netscape 8 which is using the Firefox engine and, if needed, will switch to an IE mode when it knows that the site you've popped on is best in IE. The new Netscape does have a lot of other stuff in the menu bar and not very well customizable as Firefox since you can't add more search engines which is a bummer. Also they have extensions like Firefox, but I think not a lot of people are using the browser since the extension site on Netscape was "coming soon" last time I saw that a few months ago.

I'd still say go with Firefox since that appears to be the best of the browsers IMHO. Enjoy!

Extensions aren't required in FF either. It works fine without them. They just allow users to customize it for their personal convenience. I have one that virus scans my downloads and a friend has one that monitors Abe Vigoda's status and notifies her if he is alive or dead. And anyone can make one for nearly any purpose. It's all a matter of need and priority. I find Opera doesn't do enough and I hate the crappy e-mail client. I make my kids use it for security, though.

Supposedly modifies your system for optimal performance. Gives you a quickstart icon for the browser.

Faster fox can be found by going to Tools-->Extensions and clicking on Get more extensions. I dont know that this does. When I used it I noticed a little fox in the lower right corner that timed how long it took a page to load.

Another good one is IE View which allows you to set certain pages to open in Internet Explorer (ie, windows updates). Also available in Extensions.

Yes I know, I'm well aware of FireFox and have used it.

    Just because I don't like it, doesn't mean I haven't used it.

As far as Extensions, I don't like having to install things (and extensions can be buggy), just to get the browser up to the same level as Opera.

I can't see anything that I need that Opera doesn't have.

Only thing to watch out for with extensions is they dont conflict. Now with better updating it is easy to get latest bugfixes. Very few does not get updates. 60 not conflicting extensions will work better than 7 if no. 4 and 7 dont like each other.

So dont use both Firetune and Fasterfox at the same time. Fasterfox now has a whitelist for sites not linking enhanced prefetching but just untick that troublesome option, chose "custom" setup, and you are left with all relevant FF tweaks available. On his site there is link to a pdf file showing default and preset values, one preset is default so easy to restore standard FF if you like. Has a few other goodies but most of all it is a nice and easy interface and not as crazy as some other tools and "tweaking guides". A bit overrated these tweaks but at least the delay setting all should find give noticable change. 1.5 dont need tweaks to be faster than 1.07.

Without extensions I wouldnt use Firefox thats for sure but I also dont buy the security risks about IE or IE shells so wouldnt feel much of loss. Not so hard to browse safely with IE but would probably use Opera. Not so bad with better theme. Have them all installed just for comparisons sake. Computer still works, try the same but remember a perfect Firefox is a personalized one - takes some time and effort. About security you probably should keep using Spywareblaster and other tools focusing on IE. IE engine still active and other programs might use it, RSS reader or whatever.

Here's a good tool for saving FF bookmarks.
    [UR[/URL]
    It's fast, easy and clean.
You can save your passwords, history, extensions (used to work well, but with FF 1.5 and the older version 1.0.7 still around, doesn't work as well).
I ONLY use the bookmark feature.
Saving cookies (if you know what you're doing with them) is a no-no, period.

  39. jak3y

Here's a tool I use for saving FireFox bookmarks.
It can save other stuff like, cookies, passwords, history, extensions.
But, saving passwords in a browser is a no-no anyway, cookies I'm still learning how to set them properly and are potential risks if you don't know how to use them in your favor. History? What for, that's what you have bookmarks for.
Extensions option, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. So I just have them saved in a folder on my computer and re-install them anyway.

Only reason I have opera installed on my computer, is to help opera users run opera. I have used opera way way way back when opera was a competetor to IE and netscape.

    Oh, those were the days.

IE fan boy I was, until 2001, when I got converted to .0.3 of pheonix/firebird/firefox.

I'm a trunk user. Constantly fighting bugs and new features. I know how to edit .XPI scripts to work with newer version of FF. I understand the inner workings of FF.

Opera, recently converted to a free scheme (as it was when it FIRST came out). It is only trying to bring a larger user base.

To me Opera is to flamboyant. IE is to bland. Firefox is perfect in my Classic theme of XP.

I'm a Firefox fan and wouldn't use anything else. I'm still discovering wonderful extensions that make it even better and more suited to what I do (try that with IE6). One thing that I think must be emphasised is that earl will still need IE, if only because Microsoft will not allow any other browser to download updates (last time I checked, you can visit the site, just not download). This is not a major problem as there's an extension called IE View, which allows you to open links, pages or even bookmarked sites in IE from within Firefox with a click of the mouse - seriously cool stuff!

I've been using Opera 8.5 for a month or so now and it works very well - takes a bit of getting used to as it does some things just enough differently from IE or the Mozilla products to trip one up on occasion.

If you are interested in one stop shopping, the latest extension of the Mozilla Suite, called SeaMonkey, is available for DL from http://www.Mozilla.org. It has: tabbed browser, multiple account email handling, newsgroup client, HTML editor, and you can add a Chat client via ChatZilla.

I started with Netscape back in the early days of the web and I've pretty much stayed there ever since, switching back and forth between Netscape and the Mozilla suite. Recently I've been sticking with the Mozilla branch as I don't like what AOL has done to the Netscape branch.
