From one computer to another. I have 396 MB on my old computer, it has no cd buner. My new computer has a cd buner. I was thinking just bring my old computer in and have the tech there do it. Or when I pick up my new computer take the buner out and put it in my old one, burn the data in a disk, take it back out and put it back in tyhe new one and download the info. The old computer has Win 2000 os and the new has Vista os. Is this doable?
Or is a nother way? TNX

Any of the methods you describe will work. Personally, I'd take the hard drive from the old PC, and slave it to the new PC's hard drive (or to the CD drive depending on what channels are available and if the HD is IDE or SATA). When you boot up the new PC, your old hard drive will come up as drive E: or drive F: and you can then drag-n-drop your stuff to drive C:, or just leave the old HD in the new PC as a secondary storage device....

    Or use a cross-over cable.

That's what it is right now, a second or slave HD. I have a bunch of stuff from the internet I want to keep track of. I call the guy putting together my new computer and ask him to do that. TNX

I saw that done on TV once, I think it would be easer for me to just pull this one out and bring it in. Then I can just keep useing it for my downloaded internet files. TNX

I just talked to my teck on the phone

He said my old slave HD is not compatable with my new one. So he said to get a USB Fast Drive 1GB, all I need to transfer is 396 MB. This way I can sell my old computer with the two HDs. Does this sound doable. TNX

I would simply zip the file using winzip or winrar set the compression to archive or best to get the file as small as possible if the files contain alot of text the resulting file will be quite small then with your old computer connected to the internet email the file to yourself then connect your new computer, open and download the email file

The whole process shouldnt take more than an hour or so depending on your internet upload speed and you wont have to spend a penny :)

That's the best idea yet! ! ! The only thing I've never crompressed a file. I have Winzip, and I've unziped files that I've downloaded from the web before. I guess I could try. TNX for the idea.

Yet another way is networking. With a network set up the remote computers drive looks like it is local. Fast too, relatively speaking.

Rikky I get the files compressed but

When I click email file from the WinZip program, The email window that comes up says: The message could not be sent.
    No sender was specified
Please check your News Account configuration.
I get this message after I click send. Then when I go to my email site and compose a message I can't upload an attachment. It just wont work. I'm thinking I may have a virus.

Dont use the zip and email option just zip the file,I cant really offer any help with your email service you will have to take it up with them especially since you havnt posted which one it is or exactly what happens when you try to attach the file :confused I doubt very much its malware at this point

Sign up to hotmail you will get 2gb of webspace and it has no problem with large zip files

    http://get.live.com/mail/options

Right then put the zip file on your desktop, sign into your hotmail account, from the main page click the mail tab at the top, then the "new" tab to the left, put your new hotmail address in the "To" box, type 'file' in the subject box

Click the attachments icon, then browse to the zip folder on the desktop then click 'ok' at the top left,a box will appear to let you know its being uploaded, now you just have to wait, dont use the internet just watch TV for a couple of hours or so until its uploaded, the smaller you can zip the file the faster it will be and the less chance there is of an interruption in the connection that will halt the upload,if you have dial up there no way around the speed problem you may have to leave the file uploading over night:)

I'v over simplified the instructions just so you know exactly what to do ;)
