What's the skinny on AVG 8?

I've been running AVG 7, and everything's been cool... it hasn't been the resource hog that Norton was. Then I get a message telling me to update to AVG 8 because there wouldn't be updates for AVG 7 after May of '08. So I updated... and AVG 8 has suddenly started being a resource hog. It ran a system scan today that took 2 and a half hours!!!!! It's scheduled to do that scan every f-ing day!

So, basically, I wanted to know what the rest of the geeks thought about AVG 8. Should I switch over to Avast or one of the other free systems?

AVG8 does take more time to run scans than version 7. It does more indepth scanning than previously. There are some issues with it detecting activeX settings put in place by SpywareBlaster too which is obviously a false detection. Some people like AVG8 and some do not. It will be a matter of getting more experience with it before we can really decide good or bad. Right now I will say that I have been leaning towards removing it from the How to protect yourself from malware thread since it has been causing the issue you mentioned and the FPs which they know about and do not consider FPs. They just say that SpywareBlaster and others are not compatible with AVG8. Actually my attitude is it is the other way around. AVG8 is not compatible with the other programs and AVG8 is wrong in the detections. They need to fix them. See some other thread related to AVG8

AVG 8 suddenly reporting a large number of "warnings"

    Malware Keeps Returning

You may wish to switch to Avast, but don't expect that it will be perfect either. It always had more FPs than AVG.

Thanks, chaslang. I'll keep an eye on the bugger. I don't want to switch back to AVG 7 and miss out on updates, so I'll keep working with 8 until they get the bugs worked out. Everything it found in that initial scan was active X stuff... I run Spybot in addition to AVG, and I'm wondering (from the other posts) if this is diluting the scan. I'll just surf safe and keep working through it.

I'm also going to keep an eye on the posts, in case something better comes up. Again, thanks for your advice.

They are not going to work them out based on there comment in FAQ # 1198 in the link I gave in the other threads ( http://www.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1067 ). They believe that they are correct and that the other programs are just incompatible.

That's not encouraging. What would you suggest I do? Should I switch to something else? I won't touch Norton with a ten foot pole, so... Avast? Just keep restoring the active X stuff from the vault? What would you recommend?

That is more of a personal preference and how much the problems bother you. I'll say that I have been considering removing AVG8 from the recommended list of program in the How to protect yourself sticky thread.

Any of the others listed in How to Protect yourself from malware! can be used.

This will not work since AVG8 will just delete them again. Your choice is to not use AVG8 or uninstall the other programs that are adding the activeX settings to your registry (like Spyware Blaster and Spybot). Personally I would not use AVG8 anymore since things like this, the speed change, the removal of the separate antispyware package and placing it into the AV and the removal of the free anti-rootkit program are enough for me to wave bye-bye to a long useful program which has now started to go the way of Symantec and McAfee.
