I was just infected with the dreaded Trojandownloader.xs and Abebot (.exe). After trying numerous removal tools, I looked on several sites and read many forums. The common fix seemed to be the "Hijackthis" log posted for troubleshoot. Looked complicated with all that had to be done with the results from the troubleshoots. Thought I was looking at wiping everything. But then the wife says, "Try to use a restore point". I told her I didn't think that would get rid of a virus. I tried it. Found a restore point 4 days back. Virus gone. My question is: Is it really gone? Seems too simple of a fix. I have been running with no signs of infection now for about 18 hours.

Yes at times and if the previous restore points are not infected then yes you may well be fine, so your wife is correct, I would though make sure you rescan your PC with your security software and even our guide here to double check, READ & RUN ME FIRST. Steps to flush System Restore points out Disable System Restore ( see Disable And Enable System Restore)

then scan again with your security software and have a read of this guide for some more tips to help prevent malware How to Protect yourself from malware!
