    Hello and thanks, Major Geeks,

Today after coming home my friend informed me that he though, "Your Instant Messenger crashed." I gingerly rolled my eyes and sat down. Soon afterwards I discover that I cannot send / receive anything over my DSL (alternatively I also have a cable connection, which also will not work). I assumed he installed something while I was in classes so I did a "System Restore" to Monday (two days ago). Everything went off without a hitch . . . for about an hour.

I get the critical error: "Save! has encountered a critical error and needs to close." Close that, Do Not Send Error Report. AIM closes, Firefox closes. AIM will not restart / load. Firefox will not. Ctrl+Alt+Delete will not open Task Manager or anything. Cannot open any folders with Windows Explorer. Shut Down / Restart will not work. So I manually power it off, let it sit, and boot it back up. Everything runs fine, except once again I get no traffic to the net.

AdAware showed ~52 registry keys / values for WhenU. So I removed those. Spybot came up clean. Reboot. Same results, no connection.

I then decided to check ipconfig. I have no default gateway listed under that. So I wanted to /release all. I get an error now that "cannot be released because no adapter is . . " I want to say "in a mode capable of being released." I have removed the drivers for the Linksys NIC, reinstalled them. Physically removed the NIC from the Mobo, rebooted, removed it completely, and reinstalled. Still nothing.

I also have a general 1394 onboard network adapter. I cannot get that to work either. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated and I'm ready to cooperate with any information you guys need about my system / logs.

    Windows XP Professional (SP1)

    Sincerely,

    Ryan

I would first suggest looking in Add/Remove programs for the below and uninstall if found:
WhenU or WhenUSave ( or similar)

Now I would like you to run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

If you cannot run those steps because you cannot get on line, see if you can somehow (from another PC) get the below HijackThis file to your problem PC. And follow the directions below.

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
