Where did my CD-ROM go?

I Dont know where my CD-ROM went.. I have never had a problem with it before, but now when I put a CD in it the lights come on and it appears to be working, but nothing ever autoplays and there is no link to it in My Computer. I tried to go into control panel and Add Hardware, the first time it showed it but said something about working properly but check the dependancies. I went into services.msc and cant find anything dealing with it, but I enabled like half the stuff there that was even close and it still isnt working. I opened up my comp and made sure all the cables were connected snugly, and no difference. I also thought maybe Daemon Tools affected it somehow (though ive been using it forever) but i disabled all that and no change either.

Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

Welcome to Major Geeks Wess2000, you might try uninstalling the CD, even as far as disconnecting the cables then reinstall, this has been known to eliminate the problem. Reason is that a new program has been installed that fails to see the already installed device, that sounds like what maybe happening in your case. Hope that helps, post back so we can know, and have a great time here at MG

Go to Control Panel, click on install hardware wizard, then on installed devices this may self correct the dependencies problem. If not then again in "Control Panel" go to "Systems" and DVD/CD roms and then uninstall the offending CD, then reinstall. Hope that helps Wes2000, and Thanks for posting back I may not have the right answer, but someone will help you with it just keep posting, even if it is just a "Bump" post

As in, shut down ...open the case and disconnect the drives power supply. Reboot .....shut down ....plug the power supply back into the cd drives and reboot ....let it go through the found new hardware balloons.

ah, I did that once, i didnt get the balloons though. It didnt show it as there when i restarted, I let it all load up. Shut down and plugged it back in. When I came back it was there in bios but didnt do the new hardware found stuff.

One odd thing though is in the startup it shows it, but there are a bunch of !! ! ! !!! ! ! after it and B02 or something like that. It flashes fast and I cant see it. Im not sure if that has always been there or not

Kinda sounds like the CD might have seen its day, but just to repeat a point when you disconnected the CD did you disconnect the power and data cables, sometimes just disconnecting power cables will not do it. Funny that the BIOS would see it yet MS Windows XP won't, might try downloading new drivers for the CD, there might be a driver conflict with something in MS. If a friend has a CD that they can loan you you might try swapping out first. Hope that helps you Wes

Hmm wish i had a spare cd drive to test with but I dont have access to one right now. It doesnt seem to have any drivers, but some firmware. The problem is the firmware I download doesnt detect it either so it doesnt work.. I did disconnect both cables, I took it completly out and dusted it all off. Its wierd that BIOS sees it, and it takes cds and sounds like its reading them, and give the cd's back. I mean it works perfect, windows just doesnt know it lol

Does it appear in the device manager list if you boot into Safe Mode?
