Where do you download your music from?

I am a creature of habit. So, since I got my first iPod about 5 years ago, I have been using iTunes. I think for the most part it's a good service. I love the way you can organize your music. What I don't like is that it's not compatible with any other player, which is BS.

I've always had iPods and don't plan on using anything else. But I have recently gotten the Kindle for my birthday. You can play mp3 files on it. Since I use iTunes exclusively, I can't play any of my music on it. :(

Does anyone have any other music download services that download mp3 files?

edited to add: it needs to be legal. I'm not interested in illegal downloads.

eMusic is a very good one. I have also heard good things about mp3.com. If you don't mind paying a monthly subscription fee, check if the Kindle is Rhapsody compatible. If you feel like spending some time doing research, you can check out this list.

Disclaimer: I have only used eMusic of these services, but like that one a lot. It has a lot of independent music, and lots of classical. I recommend it to anyone who asks. :)

hmmm...I'm not sure I want to pay a monthly fee for a certain amount of songs. Some months I download a bunch, some not much at all. I'm pretty sure I never download 30 a month though.

After some research, apparantly iTunes is not the only downloader with non-mp3 files. Yahoo, Rhapsody, and Napster (is that still around??) are not compatible with iPods. :( Only eMusic is so far that I've found.

And if you ever wonder why I don't use iPods, that would be one of the reasons... ;) Sorry. Just could not resist that. LOL

How do you feel about the notion of converting your collection to mp3? It'll obviously take you some hours of work, but it should be possible.

lol...hey, it's what I got for free a while back. Before that I was using *gasp* CDs in my CD player.

Very interested. At one point I did a quick look to see if I could find a way to do that and couldn't.

Rhapsody isn't compatible with iPods. It needs to be mp3

I'm a little ignorant of the kindle... which music formats does it support exactly, and what file format are your iTunes songs? iTunes tracks with DRM still on them will only play on iPods, last I checked.

It's very basic. It's mainly for reading books but it has an earphone jack and a USB so you can upload and play mp3 files to it and listen while your reading. In reality, I could just use my iPod while I'm reading, but thought it would be cool to not have to do that.

    Anyway...short answer...mp3

And the iTunes files are .aac then? DRM protected?

Yep...AAC and definitely DRM protected. (apple uses FairPlay if that makes a difference..I actually had to look that up)

I think the 6th generation iPods store their music in protected format. I have recently bought a 5th Generation iPod that stores its music in MP3 format. I hope so anyway, as I am waiting on it to be delivered to me this week. That is the reason I purchased the 5th generation iPod.

If I want to download tunes from iStore, it will download as m4a format and I will have to convert from m4a to mp3. A PITA but converters are available.

I'd rather search for MP3 downloads as you can usually find a link somewhere.

Replay Music is a pretty cool way to handle things as well. In a nutshell, you play the iTunes drm protected mp3 though Replay Music that then records a copy to a second drm free file. That can now be played on any mp3 device.

CP...you said 'iTunes drm protected mp3'. iTunes doesn't use mp3 format. They are AAC drm. Can you still use it?

That would work except it's for earlier versions and when I went to look at the post you had there in the FAQ, I don't think they'll be doing any updates. ;)

None of the iPods (my original one is a Second Gen one) has ever downloaded itunes as mp3. You used to be able to burn a CD and then upload the songs into your music folder as mp3 files, but you can't do that anymore. I *think* iTunes gives you the option to upload your music as mp3 in your Advanced tab, bazza. I was just looking at it actually.

I saw something saying it doesn't support an iPod. Even so, I don't want to pay a monthly fee.

That's because I'm an airhead who linked to the FAQ for the wrong product. Whops. :-o

Anyways. Can iTunes convert all your music to wav? If it can, I have a wav-to-mp3 converter I can link for you. Just keep in mind you are going to lose sound quality by converting twice like that.

iTunes also offer DRM free tracks now so you can convert them to mp3 in iTunes after downloading.

Weird...crashed my FF too. Guess I'll stay away.

Nope...I'll take a look. The DRM free tracks are interesting. I never heard of that. Why would they do that?

Edited to add: Found the itunes. It's iTunes plus. They charge more for each song. Interesting concept, if not a bit underhanded, imo. I've already paid for the songs. I should be able to use them on any device I want to.

They would because so many other stores started doing it that they were afraid of losing business to them. And they would lose business because of that exact approach you state: You have paid for the right to use these files, so as long as you don't sell them or give them up for free download, you should be able to listen to them anywhere, on anything. That's Fair Use, which incidentally is your legal right. ;)

I didn't mean to infer that iPods downloaded MP3's. I know they don't which is why I would not buy a 6th generation iPod when 3 of my family (incl one g/f) have them. Up to 5th generation they will store and play MP3's (I hope-- or I've wasted my money). I've got a couple of thousand MP3's to be uploaded to my 5th Genny iPod when it arrives. I did purchase a Stan Freberg track "Washington crosses the Delaware" a while ago and it downloaded as a M4a format, as a test. :cry I'll convert it later. Bazza

bazza...I'm not sure what you mean. mp3 files are still compatible with ipods and always have been. I have a new iPod Touch. It's fine with mp3's. I just downloaded 2 of them about 3 weeks ago and have them on my iPod. You can even choose to upload your CDs into iTunes in mp3 format.

    Am I missing something? :confused

In fact, here's an Apple link telling you what types of files iPods can play (dated June 2008): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1334?viewlocale=en_US

You told them you're okay with it when you agreed to the user license agreement you read before you made your payment. You did read it, right? ;)

iPods can play mp3s and always have been able to. iTunes has not always let you download in mp3-format though. They started out using Apple's proprietary AAC file format, since their closed Apple ecosystem wants you to forever buy only Apple music players. Thus, iTunes tracks originally would not work on other brands.

Lots of legal download services for music started out retaliating by making their files WAV or WMA, since iPods could not play them, and continued to do so when the mainstream user learned that WAV has higher sound quality than mp3. Apple finally caught on, and the most recent generation of iPods is at last capable of playing WAV files. Still no FLAC, OGG or WMA though.

    Yeah, yeah. :p

Actually I did know what I was signing up for and to be honest most of the time I could care less since I like my ipod and itunes. I just develop righteous indignation when they are inconvenient for me, like they are now. ;)

Good to know the history. I wonder if bazza knows that. He seems to have it all backwards.

haha...yeah, you got a nice toy there, mims.

Addendum, since my Edit button has vanished:
FLAC, OGG and WMA all have higher sound quality than mp3 as well, and FLAC like WAV is lossless. That means no compression, and zero loss of sound quality from the original. In theory anyway :)

And the Clip is awesome. The Classical music radio channel it can get me any time anywhere is slowly but surely restoring my sanity. :) And it does audio books very well.

bazza...what are you confused about? It sounds like you thought that newer ipods don't play mp3 files. Not only do they play them, but the newer version of itunes can upload them AS mp3. So, basically, you have nothing to worry about.

Seriously, if you want to listen to music, buying the CD's is usually the best way, unless it's one of those moneygrabbers with DRM. I paid for the songs, I'm not going to pirate them, so don't punish me for your problems... Sorry, shouldn't rant.

Anyway, if you've got a mic and some time you can record them through that into a .wav file and convert that to MP3.

And incidentally, I got Wal-mart to load fine on my Firefox. It's version 3.0.1 so you might have one that's too new, or Wal-mart just had their site down.

Yep, CDs are best but I've gotten really used to not having to buy the whole thing. I used to hate having to spend $12-$14 for the 3 or 4 good songs I wanted.

Basically, I'm lazy, so I'll keep downloading from itunes. :(

Thanks Laura. My iPod, ex an eBay auction, has still not arrived. I hope I haven't been ripped off. Yes, that is what I thought about MP3's. I don't need the large capacity for songs like my sons do. They are already filling up 80 gigs. I tried to buy an earlier generation iPod around 20 or 30 gigs but missed out. Seller is not replying to my emails, not a good sign. :cry Bazza

Picked it up today at the Post Office. They didn't post it until last Wednesday. Looks great. Only problem is that they left their stuff on it. I plugged it into my laptop and all I get is "Do not disconnect" warning flashing. Not real informative. I have copied their contents to a temp Folder on my C: drive and have reformatied the iPod. I am at present copying my 1600+ tunes from my C: drive to the iPod drive (E:). That seems to be working OK, but the "Do not disconnect" light is still flashing on the iPod. :confused Will wait for the transfer to finish, reboot, and see what happens.

Not sure what this all means but my 5th Gen iPod has the flat Apple connector cable and also plugs directly into a dock connector. Also as a bonus (I think) I have been using an "olde" version of Music Match Jukebox (8.10.2017). ;)

LauraR, I just opened up a new Folder in my C: drive. Then, using Explorer, I opened up the iPod drive (E) and copied all the contents across to the C: drive Folder. I am using iTunes for the iPod contents and MMJB (occasionally) for my tracks on my C: drive. Still experimenting. :-D Bazza
