    Home built-about 4-5 yrs old
    Win XP
    Asus a7v8x mobo
    AMD Athlon 2.2Ghz

This was my son's computer and he shipped it to me when he built a new one. It arrived and I noticed the heat sink and cpu fan had fallen off. I reattached them. I then plugged it in and it runs for about 2 secs and stops dead. No post, nothing. Just fans for 2 secs. LED on mobo stays lit. I tried a different power supply...no help. I noticed that there is a P6 connector not attached. I can't find anyplace for it to go. Anyone know what a P6 is supposed to connect to if anything? Maybe my mobo doesn't require it.

If the heatsink fell off thats where you need to look. A typical 2 sec shutdown is usually caused by the systems safety features preventing the CPU from over heating. It could be two things, one you may have reattached the heatsink incorrectly and its not contacting the cpu flat. Or you might have plugged the heatsinks fan to the wrong connector on the board, you have to use the one specifically marked for the cpu fan because the system monitors it and might think its not connected at all.

Typically when you remove a heatsink from the cpu, your supposed to clean off the thermal paste and but new stuff on, but I can't see that causing overheating bad enough to shut it down, as long as the paste was still fairly well intact.

The P6 connector has multiple uses depending on the system. It can be used to power a graphics card (most new cards have their own power) or it can be plugged to the mainboard but thats rare, most motherboards use 4 or 8 pin plugs if they need extra power, leaving the P6's for the graphics card(s).

Thanks for the help. Resetting the CMOS by removing the battery and using the reset jumper fixed everything.
