I am on pokey ol' dial-up, so I got the brilliant idea that I should start backing up my virus definitions so that if I ever have to reinstall stuff I wouldn't have to wait umpteen hours like I did when my old puter crashed.

Despite realizing a lot of in-the-know types despise Norton, this is what dh wanted and it's what we have. Sooooo ... I've been searching in winexplorer for where they stuff the updates every week and can't figure out where it is. Ad-aware and Spybot etc are easy to find, but does anybody know what the file name would be -- or possible ones to check out -- so I can just back it up occasionally? I don't have a lot of time to search (altho I've tried a few times) due to family crises.

Thanks for anyone who knows or can guess.

Thanks, Shadow! I want to try to make a base CD backup, then keep adding the new defs each week on a CD-RW. Sometimes I have trouble iguring out how to get my Sonic RecordNow to add to a CD-RW that I've "Loaded" but hope I can figure it out.

    Again, molto grazie!!

We don't "despise" Norton, we just don't like it. Me, for example, if I turn around and look at my program shelf behind me, have 4 different old Norton packages. 2 lots of Norton Utilities, going back to the "olde" days of DOS, Norton SystemWorks 2000, and even Norton AntiVirus.

Since reading a now defunct Australian PC mag, and joining MG, I (hopefully) have become a lot wiser, and maybe, smarter. Most people say Norton's hogs your PC resources. Other stuff, that is free, to keep and update, is readily available through the MG site. Read all the posts and you will gradually get an idea of various recommendations, and comments thereon.

Programs like Zone Alarm, Avast, AVG, CCleaner, EmpTemp, Cleanup!, Process Explorer are some of the ones you should consider. Most are available through MG.
Use the Search link to find them.

Substitute any program you are interested for "Avast" in the above link, to find out more. Bazza

Ah, but norton utilities was the bomb in the DOS days!

But, it seemed to degrade once windows came about.

It not as bad as some make out.

Yes some of it is bloatware, and yes it can be resource hungry, but it's virus capabilities are second to none.

If you do regular house keeping etc, it's fine.
