I get the impression that 'Major Geeks is based in the USA, but there appears to be no address!

The owners of Major Geeks both live in the US if that is what you are asking. It's a privately owned forum. There is no address for the actual forum.

I would most likely say major attitude has the server at his place.Since he is the Co owner.

Like LauraR said based in the USA.

Goldenskull, I know you mean well, but please stop repeating things that have already been said in threads. You do it over in the support threads too. There's just no reason to add repeat stuff.

    Thanks.

and I'm assuming TimW is saying that the server is not in MA's place. Don't state things you don't know.

The server is not "where Tim lives"....... totally other state.

As to where Tim and Jim lives, I'll let that go and if either wants to answer, they can.

I said that it could be since he is the co owner.I did not say it was.I don't know where it is.I was just guessing.

And what post have i repeated it is called Quoting is it not.

Well, last I heard, there were several Servers, (Mirrors) for M.G. Based, both in U.S. and one, (or maybe two), in Aust. So the whole question of "where THE sever is", is not applicable.:p
Yes, Tim and Jim are American and live there. The rest in 'need to know', lol.

You have identified the problem with many of your postings, including technical ones: guessing.

The next step is fixing it: stop guessing.

  16. Goldenskull

I will say this most of the posts are a guessing game so we are all guessing not just me.Be cause most of the Ops do not post the correct information or do not post enough information to let us help them.So don't just be blaming me on this issue.

Speak for yourself; if I don't have a knowledgeable answer, an answer I can confidently share due to experience, I don't answer. And Laura's right, whether you are aware of it or not or doing it intentionally or not, many of your posts in the tech forums are repeats of what someone has already said in the same thread. And one final thing as long as we are drifting in that direction, it's obvious when you copy/paste something from a source (I won't say why :-D ), but you need to give credit from the source.

Not trying to pile on, just trying to help you along as you seem to spend a lot of time here. :)

Most of "your" posts are a guessing game.

A successful tech is going to ask open-ended questions to map out the problem. That is what a lot of people here who are effective in support are doing. You see it as guessing because it is not a realtime conversation and it takes longer with threads vs. talking. There is no way you can effectively have someone post every detail or their issue upon first contact, especially if they are not technically inclined.

This is tech support 101 though, and you should know this. There are strategies for getting the job done, and none of them include guessing. So while you may be using that as your strategy to help people, it is also why you are almost entirely ineffective.

Those who are effective techs that appear to be guessing are not guessing at all. They saw a detail that they know is the cause of something else.

I used to mentor techs below me who guessed. I dealt with a lot of ticked off clients who were also burned by those guesses.

Don't do it. If you have to guess, ask open-ended questions until you can form a sound theory, or better yet, fix the problem. If that never happens, then don't answer with a guess. Do research on it and find the answer, or ask more open-ended questions until you can.

Guessing is looked down upon on every tech forum out there, including this one. Guessing in the lounge will earn a similar response due to this being a tech oriented site.

Oh and I am not just blaming you. This is a guideline for everyone, because if we get enough complaints...well we will leave that as an open-ended conclusion.

Oh, speak for yourself there, but don't try to speak for me. I never guess, and if I approached my tech support job this way, I find myself unemployed before too long.

This is pretty much the only possible way to do tech support. It may look like guessing to someone who doesn't know as much as the tech does, but that means nothing. Just because an ignorant bystander thinks it's guessing doesn't mean it is.

And for the record, speaking as someone who works in tech support for a large hardware manufacturer, this approach of "it's only guessing anyway" is deeply insulting to my entire profession. We do very difficult job, that few people could do, and the single biggest challenge we have, by far, is to try and find out exactly what the problem is. Customers who need to call tech support for help have that need because they are clueless in several ways. Gathering enough information from them that we can define what exactly the problem is, is often difficult. For one, the customer often doesn't know any of the proper terminology. For another, they don't know what we need to know, let alone why. The process is slow, it can be painful, but in the end my team of tech support reps that I train and mentor, will find a solution for the customer. Every single time. And the reason they find a solution every time, no matter what the problem is, is not because they're guessing. It's because they are very good at what they do, and because they know a lot more about the products they are being paid to support, than practically anyone else ever will.

If you truly are so ignorant of what tech support entails that you think it's all guesswork, try doing it for a living, for a company that holds you accountable and fires you if you don't live up to their expectations, and I promise you that this delusion of yours will shatter in less than a work day.

Yes, this bothers me a lot more than it should. Guessing? Really? rolleyes

I fix and repair computers Regularly i am going to say this i am more into the visual aspect i need to see what is going on.Some people are better in different ways like forums.

You guys are acting like i do not know what i am talking about.

I have been fixing and repairing computer systems for 15 years.Every thing i do know i had to learn it on my own with out any help from any body.

And one thing that really really annoys me the most is when it seems that every body gangs up on me for crap like this. When there are far worse things to worry about then this.

How often do you see me ask a question in software or hardware or even the malware forums not very often.

B.T.W.:- I didn't "guess" either in my last post. Because of the simple fact that M.G.'s used to list what servers they had, and where, on their front page. Was a while back, I.I.R.C. But no matter, anyway.;)

  22. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

First of all, guess-work that leads to unhelpful replies in a tech support forum is not crap. It's a pretty big deal. Any time I see a post on MGs that gives bad advice or that looks like the poster is guessing or trying to BS their way out of admitting they don't have an answer, I report them. I hope others do as well. People come to this forum because it has a solid reputation for helpfulness, integrity, and knowledge. That creates a certain unspoken but still very real obligation for anyone who takes it upon themselves to answer questions here. If I post bad advice here that makes an OP's situation worse, that makes MGs as a whole look bad. I'm pretty sure the owners and admins wouldn't appreciate that.

Secondly, if you didn't mean to imply that all tech support in the end is just guesswork, then your previous posts in this thread were phrased incredibly poorly and you need to work on your written communication skills.

And lastly, any time a customer calls in to a tech support call center and makes a point of spelling out how long they've worked with computers and how experienced they are, that's a huge red flag. No one who actually knows what they're doing needs to flaunt their credentials, their work speaks for them. I can tell within a couple of minutes if the person I'm talking to is very knowledgeable or just pretending, without needing to know anything about their resume or credentials. I just need their answers to my questions.

Forums work the same way. If I ever have to reassure someone in the Hardware forum by spelling out that hardware tech support is my day job, then my posts in that thread have sucked. I should be able to convey my knowledge and expertise without using my job title as a crutch.

And with that, I will go watch football. It's Sunday, and the Packers are winning. :)

How do you know i do not have 15 years experience in computer systems.

I am really getting tired of arguing about how i am all ways wrong blah blah this and that.

And you are still ganging up on me i am done on this thread sick of it.:mad

What's that got to do with the perceived guessing on your replies?

Folks seem to being trying to give you some advice, which when done in the past in attempts to help you out(your spelling, for example) you end up going on some whiney rant, i.e. "You guys are acting like i do not know what i am talking about" in your most recent most.

I'll just let you be, it's obvious I waste my time when voicing an opinion to you or for you.

You work with the computers directly.

That explains your trouble with getting troubleshooting data on tech a forum and resorting to guessing. You work with tthings directly, which is much easier and a different skillset. .

There are those who take criticism as useful advice to better themselves.

Then there are those who huff and puff and storm off. The first group learns, while the second seemingly knows it all.

    Don't be in group #2.

    The Packers were winning. :cry

    You're missing the point.

The point is that you shouldn't have to spell that out for people to take you seriously in a forum. Your posts and advice should be enough to convey your level of knowledge and expertise. If they're not doing that on their own, trotting out your credentials isn't going to help you.

    Remember,

You should too. If you have any, that is.

I pretty much lose all my male and some of my female friends when football season starts. All they want to do is talk, listen to or watch football, nothing else.

I just told one of my friends she is useless to me now (that football season started) and she agreed. :-D

There are some really dedicated and knowledgeable amateurs on this forum who alongside a number of professional techs give sound solid advice which is why MGs is recognized as the best and is known for delivering answers that can be relied on.

I was an amateur hardware specialist who built custom PCs but due to a medical condition i realized my advice had become unreliable so in order to protect the reputation of MGs i stepped back from giving answers.

I am now an avid reader and am lurking around here every day.

Many of us who have been here for a while, me included, at some point have been told to either shape up or ship out. Quite honestly Goldenskull's warning was and is pretty light compared to many others in the past.

Google is your friend when helping in forums. But it can easily turn into that one friend who always talks but never really has anything to say. Taking the warning as an insult will only make things worse. Instead, take it as encouragement to do better.

A few salient points here for G.S. and anyone else, who misses the point(s). Not picking on anyone, just a clarification, by someone who has been in I.T. for over thirty years, (yes, I am a fossil, lol).

1). Most of us have built/modded our own P.C.'s. After all, most of us ARE Geeks. That does NOT make you a Tech, any more than killing virus' and installing an O.S. does. Using a screwdriver and loading up software, or a Ute, does not a Technician, make.:p
It's like a comparing a professional Mechanic with a back yard tinkerer with cars. he might be great, he might not, either.

2). If you don't know the answer confidently - back off! You will learn more by reading and learning, than attempting to be 'clever'.

    3) I know impatience and wanting to be just like "yadda, yadda", is a factor, esp. in the younger people. Just learn patience, young Grasshopper, lol, you can NOT learn 20-30 years experience in a VERY dynamic industry in a few years part-time tinkering. Because, as impressed as friends and family may be, it doesn't make you an 'expert'.

4). Everybody is wrong sooner or later, me included. Just accept it and learn from the experience, rather than the puerile whining I keep reading.

5). As said, building a P.C. in front of you is an entirely different skill level to helping on-line and on the phone, when the Clients don't even know the difference between a hard drive and the P.C., itself, sometimes. Or they think they know everything. One should make an effort to learn the difference, i.m.o.

    ***
Could be just me. But that's the way some of the recent Posts came across, i.m.h.o. Sorry if I've stepped on any toes, not meant to be, LoL! :). Like I said, not just aimed at one member, so no one is "ganging up". I thought that kind of thinking gets left behind in High School.

    What she said . . .

I don't think anyone is "ganging up" on you, Goldenskull . . . from what I've seen most comments are intended to be constructive criticism, and not just criticism for its own sake. I believe most of us here have been called on the carpet at least once for something we've posted . . . try not to take stuff so personally. :)

As to where the MG owners live . . . I thought they lived "in the cloud" . . . :cloud9
