Where to start? No Audio device, etc.

Ok, where to start.

Two weeks ago I bought a used computer off Craigslist. He was selling b/c he just got a new laptop. He'd formatted the hard drive and loaded a fresh version of XP media center and that was all. He let me know I'd have to go to the ATI site and download the drivers, said it'd be real easy. Well, it was until it asked me for a CD for the DVD decoder. Called and he said he'd send it to me- still haven't received it. At this point i'm not holding my breathe. So I need a way around not having the cd. Any ideas?

Secondly, and most importantly, I HAVE NO SOUND! In the "sound and audio device properties" it says I have "no audio device". I've spent several hours reading through various posts on this all over the net- can't get anything to work. Keep in mind I'm pretty newbish, I know just enough to be dangerous, but I CAN follow directions if anyone can point me to a solution.

I'm just frustrated beyond belief here. Help!

I will guess that this is a home built pc, get the numbers off the mother board, it will be something like Msi p4mv-, maybe not even close but it will be in large numbers, not hidden, look between the cpu and pci slots. ed

Google 'Aida32' A program that tells you the make and model of all your h/w. Also provides links for where to download the drivers for them!

 

Awesome guys, I'll try it and let you know. Like I said- complete newb, and the guy I bought from is sending me the disk (got a call today) but my frustartion level on this has been HUGE. Wish me luck.

 

Got aida32. It gave me a lot of info, but when you have no idea what you're looking for/at it doesn't help much. Tried going to the Windows download page, and i have an unauthentic copy of windows xp. So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. F@!%$##!

ok, got the name of the motherboard. now what? and sorry for being such a noob, but I've searched for hours for answers.

UPDATE: J sent me the ATI cd. Now it would appear my only issue is the lack of a sound device. ALMOST THERE!!!! (I think)

 

And we're live ladies and gents! Thanks for your help Tunered and Akumos- couldn't have gotten it w/out you guys. You can't realize how excited i am- this is my first computer. WOOT!
