    My Name is Old Glory

    :majorby Howard Schnauber:major

I am the flag of the United States of America.

I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I stand side by side with the Maple Leaf on
    the worlds' longest undefended border.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
    Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
    I stand for freedom.
    I am confident.
    I am arrogant.
    I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
    my colors a little truer.

    I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
    I am worshipped — I am saluted.
    I am loved — I am revered.
I am respected — and I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war
    for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome and the beaches of Normandy.
Guam, Okinawa, Korea and KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me,
    I was there.

I led my troops, I was dirty, battle worn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me And I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
countries I have helped set free. It does not hurt,
    for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled on
the streets of my country. And when it's by those whom
I've served in battle — it hurts.
But I shall overcome — for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stood watch over
the uncharted frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.

When I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my wounded
comrades on the battlefield, When I am flown at
half-mast to honor my soldier, Or when I lie in the
trembling arms of a grieving parent at the grave of their
fallen son or daughter, I am proud.

MY NAME IS OLD GLORY. LONG MAY I WAVE.

I was driving past the Albert Dock in Liverpool when I heard the news of the at the time plane crash into one tower, subsiquently later once home and turned on the news found out that it was the attrocious terrorist attack we all live with to this day.

Also remember clearly the thread on this that sprang up on Tweakfiles and one of the members who lived close to the Pentagon mentioning their windows being shattered by the force of the impact/explosion.

Scars are still felt to this day by many but we stand strong and move on but we will never forget all the poor souls lost that sad day, no matter what nationality we are, it touched all in some way.

I was taking a Social Studies assignment out of my backpack after getting to school, and one of my friends told me what had happened. I didn't believe him.

Our morning classes were spent watching TV, and one of the other students had an uncle who worked in Tower 1 - he found out two days later he made it out just as the building came down.

I'll never forget how bright and sunny it was that day. I found that incredibly disturbing.

I was in an elevator, with the Mayor. I had spent all morning in the civic center attempting to get assistance (Single mom, no money) and they were discussing if they should close the building or not. At that point the second jet aimed for the pentagon was missing and noone knew where it was headed.

I was confused, because they were discussing closing the building but not why, and I asked the woman at the finger printing desk what had happened. She said WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??? I said uh.. here. And she pointed at the TV and told me.

Then I went home and sat down on the couch to watch the rest. I called my mom to see if she knew and she did.

I remember standing against the glass of my high rise apartment window, and shaking inside because I knew we were going to war. All I could picture was world war two and how much worse it would be this time...

At home, had the TV on and then SAW the second plane going into the 2nd building. Utterly SHOCKED and in disbelief!! Then later reality sank in....

Many lost their lives un-necessarily and never have been able to forget it!

Words still fall short to express myself how sorry I feel about all these lives lost and the consequences of the terrorist attacks.

My father lost his life in WWII when the city was bombed by the Germans one day after liberation of the city. I was too young to remember but it had a big impact on us and the whole family suffered the consequences. He was one of many.

My heart yearns for the day when all wars will be over and done with, although I must admit that my dreams must be unrealistic.

    Men never learn from history......

Was in my office seeing patients. What a shock. Rest of the day was a quagmire of crying patients and staff. Hospital ramped up into disaster mode just in case something went on in Houston.

    Sad day.

    Support our troops!

    Never forget the vets.

I was in the allergy doctor's office when the first one hit and they thought it was an accident. I was at my mom's when the first building collapsed into rubble and my mom was trying to get ahold of my dad who was in the city that morning. One of my good friend's brother died in the Trade center.

In my office, getting ready to start the day. Just another routine day, or so I thought, with the 10th Mountain Division when my wife called and told me to turn on the T.V. and that a plane had just hit the WTC.

I immediately went and told the Colonel, he needed to come to Operations and collected the Command Sergeant Major on my way back to my office. As you can imagine our day didn't turn out they way we had planned it.

Loading in a show (Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) on the campus of Western Michigan University with a cast full of actors from NYC. Campus went into immediate lockdown (we finally were allowed to leave at around 7pm) and we sat around watching TV and trying to contact everyone we knew.

Wasn't until a week later I found out my friend Danny was on American Flight 11.

I was in a library, feeling helpless. War is hard but sometimes necessary and I understand the logic of some wars but attacking innocents I will never understand, it's just evil.

I had just come home from work and was watching some TV when the regular programs where interrupted by the news of the first plane, then watched in horror as the second plane hit. When it was realized that it was a terror attack and not an accident, the flood of emotion that overcame me are hard to describe all the innocent lives that were lost. Then the memories came back, of all the terror attacks over here in my country, remembering family and friends that had been killed. Trying to contact a friend’s wife in NY knowing that he worked in the towers but being afraid to at the same time. It took hours to get though to her but thank G-d he had not left for work early that day. I was at home here in Israel but my heart and thoughts were in New York.

At home, preparing a meal for my elderly mother --- when she called out "They've flown a plane into one of the Towers!" As I sat with her...covered with goose bumps, I thought "This is It!"; as she recalled the many military flights of planes overhead during WWII.
The newspaper days afterwards were filled with political cartoons - one that I wish I had saved... The American Bold Eagle filing his talons!

I was getting off an elevator when a friend of mine who lives in NYC called me to tell me what happened. I couldn't believe it when he told me. I remember seeing footage of the plane hitting the first tower and then the confusion when the second one hit. I was like no way.. that's a different angle or something of the first tower but it sunk in only a few seconds later. I though to myself.. one plane, could have been a horrible mechanical failure.. 2 planes? someone is getting a visit from our armed forces. It was right then that I wished I wasn't married so I could go down to the nearest recruiters office and say " I want to go right f'ing now ".. what a day.. what a day.

Absolutly MarkT, even when the troubles in NI where spilling over into mainland UK, and I remember being evacualted a few times from work due to bomb scares and was in Belfast at times of a few bombings so felt the shockwave of shear terror, many in NI and mainland UK was known beforhand in most cases that something was going to happen, the 9/11 attack wow, was so out of the blue that no-one had chance to prepare or get out of the danger zone.

Watched a few documentaries on TV lastnight on the attacks and on some woman who portrayed herself as a victim and the Marriot Hotel and its survivors and the stories really him home at how bad the world has come of late.

Friend of mine whos in the press was cought up in that and luckily he was ok, cuts and bruises only.
