    Hi Everyone

I recently had a problem with my xp hard drive - it stopped booting up.

I ran xp repair console to no avail, but I was able to get the c: and d: prompts. I could not access the data on c: (directory enumeration error) but I could access d: no problem (same drive different partitions).

    I ran bootmbr on c:
I ran bootfix on c: both succesfully,
then copied \i386\ntldr and \i386\ntdetect.com to drive c:

I then did a dir on c: and it showed ntldr and ntdetect.com on c:

I ran bootcfg/rebuild and then came up with an error message about being unable to run chkdsk and there was an unrecoverable error.

My question - is there some way of getting at the data if I install the drive as a slave?

Or is there another utility I can run to boot the drive again?

    Thank-you

i don't know of another utility to boot your drive. i've provided the link below, as i don't know if you have your comp setup for profiles, and/or passwords. i've done this several times, and i recently bought a h/d enclosure (usb), and have done it from there (it's alot easier than disconnecting everything, and opening my tower). anyway, hope this helps. g/l, sos

hmm, i tried the link provided (not by me), but it was invalid, and if corrected is for nike shoes!! :(

Alternatively, you can boot to a "live" CD like a Bart's PE disc, the UBCD4Win, or even a Linux disc like Knoppix. Since your D: partition is accessible, you can move your data from partition C to partition D. You can then reload Windows on C:.

Thank-you to all who replied - I am waiting for a cable/interface so I can connect the drive to my desktop (the bad drive is out of a laptop - 44pin i/face) as a slave.
