Not really. There are good and bad apps. Some detect and protect better then others. It's usually a pretty short list.

yep me to ,i used to have one but as said they take over your PC and slow it down ,its imposable to play online games with an anti virus running ,scanning and updating in the background.Thats why i said everyones needs are different . If i was to download files pier to pier chances are in one of the the files ill find a Trojan or alike, but if i Ware just a browser for instance then ive not much to fear.So having said that would downloading be the riskiest of all activities when it comes to Internet use.I downloaded a file from Download.com a safe site:-Dand the download app wouldn't open so ignored ,a few weeks later i had a Trojan :(i know it was from download.com cause it was the only one i made(by the way it was Free Sound Recorder)Personally i use Winaso reg optimizer it cleans all my Internet tracks n history and all that jazz its not ruining all the time only when I wont to check,in con junction to that and from previous experience i also use an antirootkit called Reanimater,so far no problems for a family used comp! :)

Download.com moves slowly. If they find a file, they can take weeks to remove it. Most of these "malware free" websites are the new scam/ It's easy to promise malware free, with so many wildly changing variants and scanners, it's easy to miss malware and blame that. Authors like to put up buttons shoing there crap is "certified", too bad Joe Blow does not know sometimes this means it was "certified" by some kid in his dorm room in Romania working part time.

Ive had a good few files from this site over the years and this is the first one ive had problems with, ive also downloaded this one before and only did it again du to a reinstall IE new hard drive. as you know its ALWAYS advisable to read other peoples comments on files that your downloading and once you have weeded your way through that lot then you usually have a better idea of the files integrity.Do you think that somehow ive downloaded file +malware?is that how it works ,one day a file is safe the next not:confused

    Update:
I am now using version 1.46.
I have the Protection -> Scheduler -> Update configured for hourly updates.
This has worked without a hitch and is transparent.

Hourly is a bit much, there is security then there is overkill. Daily is even more then enough. Of course I run nothing and never get infected by just being careful.

I've used AVG Home Edition (paid version) for about 3 yrs, and it has caught & quarantined several attacks. At times, I get false positives. Let me just say that AVG's Technical Support Team (the one you get access to when you purchase it) is by far the most excellent that I've encountered. DON'T confuse Technical Support Team with AVG Customer Service! Technical Support is with AVG HQ in the Czech Republic. Their service is sterling--without equal, in my experience.

AVG Customer Service is with any number of distributors of AVG (which means it is non-existent). If you don't believe me, send an email to both groups and see which one answers you first. Customer Service replies to me with an automatically-generated ticket number, then I have never heard from them the second time. EVER!!

If you get this Technical Support one email (has to have your license number on it), you've got a solution within 24 hours. But don't take my word for it.

OK, off my soapbox (I just watched O'Reilly). At times, I mentioned getting false positives, and I wanted to explain what I meant by that: Locked Files and Password Protected Files. AVG will pick them up and report them to you, but it cannot scan them for you. I asked a Technical Support guy about the Locked Files, and he said if a file was locked, it could not be accessed by a virus, trojan, malware, etc., or me. Password Protected Files I never had an occasion to ask, but I will shortly.
