    Hi guys
just a general question My avira prenium trial running out shortly
and Im thinking of keeping the avira but using the free one
the only snag is that it doesnt come with a email scanner
do you know of any reputable firms that have just the scanner or are they all included in the av now like avast and comodo

    Hi

To be honest, I would be wary of adding another scanner to scan for malware as it would pretty much be the same as adding two antivirus applications and "may" slow your PC down.

But I personally dont enable email scanning as while it may scan the attachment before you open it, the main resident scanner of an AV will scan any attachment that you save/open anyway for known malware from the antivrus apps known definition file.

What medium do you use for email, online (gmail, hotmail etc) or do you download it to Outlook, Thunderbird via IMAP POP3 ? if online email Avira's scanner iirc doesnt cover that option whereas Avasts does, but then Avira free will suffice as anything downoaded will be scanned.

Personally I use and recomend Avast as it offers some all around options.

I have on line medium like google and yahoo i use for friends
but the one im concerned about is outlook
i seem to get tones of spam mail every time i open it up
iv read your thread about controlling spam via the rule method which i will put to use
but im worried that a virus might get through the tons of mail
but if you say that avira will protect my comp from anything that down loaded i neednt worry

    Hi

Generally the malware is in an attachment and those will be caught by the resident AV, others are links in spam email that take you to infected sites, these too generally get blocked by the AV, but both these methods of delivery of malware depend on the user knowing they are not from a friend and deleting if in inbox and purging the spam folder on regular basis.

Rules are good but sadly the malware writers do change their tactics and domains to try and get around this but adding rules with common spam words does limit the amount of spam in the inbox.

Also many email applications have gotten good at filtering Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Gmail and Hotmail are all good these days, I only see maybe 2 misses a week and spam in my inbox opposed to spam folder.

One application you can try is http://majorgeeks.com/download4316.html comes with a trial of the PRO version first, then after is free and just like AVG and other AVs tags the bottom of mail with the company name, worth a trial.

    Thanks I will try it
Lol For some strange reason all My Emails get marked with
the Word *** Spam **** when it gets to Me any way but there is a few exception that do slip through being unmarked
