Which Email To Do What?

OK, I’m confused. I have FossaMail as my desktop email application, and I have four different email addresses, and now each of those addresses wants to be my mail collector. So do I scrap the four separate accounts and do one with aliases, or keep the four and designate one as a mail collector? Does it matter? And I can’t lose track of my original email account – the ISP I pay every month – or can I?

So why four accounts? Well simple, really. Each account is linked directly to a specific computer, or perhaps better said, each of my computers has its own email address, except the “Master” (original) account which has two (one for business, one for personal use). It just seems over complicated.

Any opinions out there? Thanks in advance.

Never even heard of FossEmail but if the way it handles multiple email accounts is confusing you I suggest switching to Gmail which does this with ease. And if you prefer to use a client then Thunderbird works seamlessly with Gmail.

Hi Earthling! Thanks for responding. What I find confusing is trying to sort out whether I'm better off having one email address plus aliases or having 4 separate email accounts. Or does it not make any difference?

FYI, FossaMail is an email client like Thunderbird but optimized for 64 Bit architecture. Its a sister application to Pale Moon, the optimized 64 Bit browser.

If you use an email client, like FossaMail, it should grab email at however many email addresses you throw at it. None of your 4 has to do the collecting, that's what an email client is for.
I haven't downloaded email in decades but when I did, I used PocoMail. I configured it to go out to each email address and grab the mail.

Keep your 4 email accounts. Looking over my list, I have 11 email addresses. (Some I only check once a week and a few about once a month). Two of the 11 are throw-aways. One keeps the mail for a few days then dumps it and the other forwards it to one of my main accounts, based on a number I select. These are useful for signing up at sites that require an email but you know you do not want to hear from them again.

Hello plodr! I hear what you're saying, its how I have things configured now. When I'm at a site that I want to hook to, what email I use depends upon which computer I'll be using with that site. Work goes to one computer, backup of data to another, etc. . And all accounts show up in the FossaMail client interface on my Master Computer.

What started me thinking was an ad from Microsoft that talked about using Outlook.com as my mail collector, spinning off however many aliases I would need. So I started to wonder what the advantages / disadvantages each system would entail, hence the question.

BTW, if you haven't downloaded your emails in decades, how do you get email? Or don't you??

If you are happy for all incoming mail to end up in the same Inbox regardless of the address it was sent to then use aliases. If you want a separate Inbox and set of folders for each address then don't use aliases. That's it, or am I missing something here?

plodr obviously uses webmail, no email client. I still use a client but sometimes wonder why, with webmail so capable nowadays and accessible from everywhere on every device.

Thank you Earthling! That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I do want to keep the in-boxes separate, its how I know which computer something is tied to. Which settles the question - 4 separate accounts with no aliases.

    Again, my thanks.
