I prefer Norton 2002, but be carefull what updates you allow. I don't like Norton 2003 since it caused a additional 5 to 7% performance hit on my PC compared to Norton 2002.

    None of the above.......

I use a hardware/router firewall, with Zone alarm basic
I have tried every one on the list and found Zone Alarm to be the least obtrusive and served my needs the best.....
Not perfect, but good for me.

A hardware firewall is the best

    I like Sygate.

I tried Kerio, and it gives me nothing but endless errors via alert dialog boxes. Once again, a known issue that hasn't been fixed.

Never tried ZoneAlarm Pro. I didn't like ZoneAlarm Basic because you can't configure it to accept incoming packets by application and port number, so you can't run any servers (I always use UltraVNC on my machines, and occasionally an FTPd).

However, I plan on picking up a home router sometime soon. Partly for security, but mostly for conveinence.

ZoneAlarm in my opinion isn't that great, if you run a port scanner with the SRC port as 53 (DNS) then you can just scan the box. That bassicly gives everything away and of course ends up with you being in alot of trouble.... That and ZoneAlarm is annoying as hell... Any firewall that drops all incoming connections but can route on ports that you want too is so-so by me...

I totally agree 100 percent. ZoneAlarm is my favorite firewall. I find it to be the best.

    I use the free version.

Sigh, Zone Alarm comes in 3 flavors and is very configurable. The fact that someone didnt use it (nonetheless all 3 versions) enough to discover all its features does not mean its for people with limited experience. Lets get our facts straight instead of just speaking off the cuff. Personally, I use it because I like its ease of use, so you are correct (jon) in that it might be an easy choice for ease of setup, though most of them I use setup easily and all require the same setup routoine allowing or disallowing access. I am a registered user of the Pro version. I dislike Nortons for same reason as most of their crap, too much overhead. Plus, if configured incorrectly, its the #1 reason people cant download from us.

I've used sygate personal firewall (not pro.) I liked it alot, infact it helped me solve a lot of problems with my computer. However, when I updated to version 5.6 it gave me some problems that ultimatly lead to me not being able to use it. If you download version 5.5 I recomend sygate personal firewall. I'm kind of shaking about the 5.6 version. Alot of people have been reporting problems with it. You can get 5.5 with the link in this forum http://forums.sygate.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12072.

I have PC-cillin Security It comes with a firewall that I like. However, I also have Kerio and believe it to be very good. My son prefers Zonealarm. Also along with PC-firewal and others, you didn't mention XP's builtin ;)
Outpost may be great, but don't try to install when other firewalls are installed (I know). Some of us learn the hard way.
