Which is best, reformat or try to remove Vundo Variant?

Hi. I am new to the Majorgeeks forums. We are having a problem on my husbands computer. I have read the instructions for removing the problem, however I am wondering if it would be easier or better to do a complete reformat of the computer.

He is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
    Security and Maintenance Programs are:
    Webroot Secure Anywhere
    SUPERAntiSpyware Professional
    PC Tools Performance Toolkit

When running SUPERAntiSpyware it finds Adware.Vundo/Variant. He chooses the option to delete the problem and reboots only to have the same problem repeat when he runs the SAS immediately after reboot.

He did have the same problem last week when running SAS but assumed it was taken care of after choosing the option to quarantine and remove then rebooting. He didn't run another SAS until today as he thought the problem had been resolved.

Two days ago he also had a problem with a black monitor screen that did not come out of hibernation when moving the mouse or pressing the space bar on the keyboard. When turning the monitor off and restarting, it would briefly flash the brand name Acer quite dimly and then display "No Signal" and go black. We remedied this by turning off computer, removing power plug to PC and holding down on PC power button. After that he plugged the PC back in and turned back on the PC. The monitor then worked. (Found this remedy from an online search.) Don't know now if this had anything to do with the Vondo Variant.

I have all the operating disks and additional software for the computer. I know how to do a complete reformat. But being self-taught, I don't know if it is better to try to remove the problem by following the instructions for removing Vundo found here or to do a complete reformat. There is not really anything to be lost on the computer of importance as we have a second computer where most things are stored.

So the short question would be "What is the best option for me? To reformat or try to use the Malware removal guide?"

    Thank you so much.

Thank you very much for the response. I contacted Webroot and they told me SuperAntiSpyware was picking up "ghosts" of what had already been removed by the virus scan. Explained to me in a way that made sense. They remotely checked my computer and said all was well.

Also they told me doing a reformat for the problem would be like burning down your house to kill a spider.
