    Hi Everybody,
    I am trying to find the better HDD between ST1000DM003 and ST31000524AS. Both are 1 tb. The first one has 64 mb. and the second 32 mb. cache. The second one is a bit costlier than 64 mb. cache hdd. Kindly tell me why this is so and which one is better. Both are by Seagate.
    Regards and Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks :)

    Not sure where you are, but Newegg has both drives for the same price. They are both Seagate Barracuda drives, which I have had a lot of experience with and do reccommend.

    The Passmark site rates the ST1000DM003 above the other in performance and value:

    http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=Seagate+ST1000DM003-9YN162

    http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=Seagate+ST31000524AS

    I'd go with the ST1000DM003 for better performance. Either would be a dependable drive, though, based on my usage experience with the Seagate Barracuda's. Never had a problem with any I have had. Might not hurt to check the Seagate forums to see if there have been any issues with either drive.

    On further research, I see the ST1000DM003 has several "problem" posts on the forums. The most recent ones (from this year) indicate a firmware update took care of the issue.

    Not seeing any negative posts about the ST31000524AS

    Thank you very much Spad for your suggestions. I also read the posts though I don't know what is cold booting. Googling further I came to know that Gigabyte motherboards 'shrink' 1 tb. hdd to 32 mb. My motherboard is Gigabyte G31. Somebody had a solution in Ultimate Boot Cd. But frankly I am scared of doing it. What do you suggest?
    Again, Thank you very much.

    The model number for your motherboard is incomplete. Could you post the full model please?

    I haven't heard of a post-2005 motherboard shrinking a 1TB HDD, but I can confirm when we have your full model number.

    Thank you Collinsl. These are the details ;
    Mother Board : GA-G31M-ES2L Rev.2.0
    Bios Version : FH
    Psu : 450 Watts.
    Ram : Kingston 2 Gb.

    I read about the Gigabyte bug 32 which shrinks a 1 tb. hdd. to 32 mb. while installing xpress recovery, without asking. That's why I am worried.
    Regards.

    Personally, I'd spend a few extra bucks for a WD Caviar Black. They have a 5-year warranty and (in my experience) are the most bullet-proof consumer grade drives on the market.

    Hi Friends,
    Here is the latest.
    @gman863
    Caviar black is good. But it costs 60% more. So way above my budget.
    @collinsl
    I received an email from Gigabyte saying that the problems were in their earlier motherboards and they have been overcome subsequently and my motherboard does not have this problem.
    @Spad
    I will buy ST31000524AS as you suggested.
    Thank you all for your prompt suggestions and Thanks to majorgeeks.
