    Hello all,
A friend of mine is asking if she can remove any of the following: I have been researching and understand most of it(yes she can). My question is: does she need J2SE java and a TM java installed? If just one of them, which one(J2SE or TM) should she stick with? She's running XP. Thanks

    J2SE runtime Environment 5.0 update 10
    J2SE runtime Environment 5.0 update 11
    J2SE runtime Environment 5.0 update 6
    J2SE runtime environment 5.0 update 9

then Java (TM) 6 update 2
    java (TM) 6 update 3
Java (TM) SE runtime Envoronment 6 update 1
PS. I realize there are later versions.

Uninstall all previous versions of Java from add or remove programs, then install the latest version, Java 6 update 4 from HERE.

    Regards Jason :)

Thanks Jason for the reminder. It is a pity that the Java installer isn't a lot smarter in picking up previous versions, so we can limit the amount of superseded programs on our PC's. See thumbnail for just a few entries on my PC. Bazza

It's my understanding that this is by design. Some programs require certain versions of java to work properly. In order not to break an installed program, nothing is removed when a new version of java is installed. What's bad is that java needs patching so I guess we're stuck with either being fully patched and possibly breaking a program or being susceptible to an exploit and having programs work. <sigh> Computers don't get any easier!

Bazza, don't worry about it. Remove all but the newest version of java - create a restore point before you do. If any program doesn't want to work, go back to the restore point.
Quite possibly a program that needs a special version of java might have that included. I know some of my older programs included a version of Adobe Reader, if it was needed.

Thanks again, plodr. I've been mulling over the various replies and came to a similar conclusion. ;) I'm going to remove all, install the latest version and if any program needs the old(er) version/s, I'll re-install them.

Thanks for the reminder about Restore points, I usually create a new one each weekend, but I'll do a special one for this exercise. :D
