  1. I have a dell comp..no biggie.Hope this is the right fourm. Anyway, i used Magicjellybean to get the "product key" from my computer...still no biggie... but it's different from the sticker on the case??? So i tried another keyfinder and it was the same "key"?? I thought that they would be the same? Or do they just slap a sticker on there cases just any ole way? does this mean the re-install disk will be different also? Do i have three keys? One on the case...the one in the OS...and another in the disk??? Does it really matter??

It should match, your only concern would be that someone installed a pirated version of the operating system and at some point, you will have to get your own. I dont know the history of your pc, so not sure if this is possible. Matt.Chugg from our forums wrote a neat tool, did you try it:

  3. Well i did buy it from Ebay... so it being a illeagal copy is possiable. But I've had it for about a year now...updates fine.....even had to "reinstall" it again from the MBR...once or twice....three times lol and it always passes the windows test. Can't see a piteted copy passing for so long..oh and the keyfinder you suggested showed the same "keys" Wish there was a way to see what the key on the disk is without having to install Xp again. But i know the dISK IS "REAL" , it came from Dell . And man this responce was FAST!! Now if the other question i asked could be.......ha ha Thanks though!!!

There is a valid XP corporate key out there that has always worked. I would write both keys down just in case.

Go to your control panel, click system. Your key that is installed is right there on that screen in all its glory for you :)

  5. Yup sure is..now i feel dumb! Thanks again!!

Dell ships PC's with an OEM product key with the pre-installed WinXP. It's been my experience that the preinstalled OEM keys are different than the key on the sticker. When you reload and you're asked for a product key, use the key from the sticker. If you use the OEM key, you may not be able to activate or access any Windows updates.... there is no key on the disk, just a mathematical algorithm that checks the key you type in to see if it's a valid key. You can enter ANY XP product key as long as it's valid. Dell restore CD's usually don't require you to enter a product key; but if if does, enter the key from the sticker on the case.
