Ok so I just got a new laptop that has Vista on it. But as I'm going to school for programming I really want to dual boot with linux. But I just wanted some recommendations on which one to use? My school uses Ubuntu so I'm leaning towards that. But what distributions would you guys suggest that have used linux a lot more than me? Also if you could recommend any software that would be awesome!

I need to be able to write programs in a lot of different languages: Assembly, C, C++, Java, Scheme, Lisp, Python, Pascal, ML, Haskell, Prolog, JavaScript, HTML, .NET, C sharp

So any advice would be awesome! Thanks!

You should try some live CDs/DVDs and let the computer decide.
The hardware determines what distro to run.

I don't run Ubuntu because it an never find my networked printer yet other distros (PCLinux, MEPIS, puppy and Xandros/Debian etch hybrid) can. Since printing is important to me, I haven't installed it.

I personally like Ubuntu the best, but I've heard other distros support hardware better. So if you aren't stuck on one in particular, so go with whatever one works the best.
