Which Of These Solutions Best For Disabling Updates?

I recently came across a message board where one could post a Tech Q and choose to wait for a solution, without needing to post replies (sorta like Quora.) But I can't remember which forum that was, so i'll try here.

I'd appreciate knowing which of the below Microsoft solutions is simplest/and/best for Disabling Win-10 updates?
Not that i have Win10, rather this is a pre-emptive question. Thanks!

Thanks, Eldon! There are those who say it's a bad idea to permanently disable Win Updates, but there's someone who's been telling me that ever since he permanently disabled updates it's been smooth sailing for him, and i've read other such experiences. (in his case i think he has Win7 & been wanting to avoid Win10 superimposing via updates)

I can't figure out who is more correct, but i tend to favor the latter, despite dire warnings by tech people.

I suppose the stopwinupdates software isn't intended to "permanently" disable updates? (despite that some of us might use it for that?

    This is a debatable subject...

I have turned of updates in Windows 7 Ultimate since 2010.
    I have absolutely no issues/problems/malware/etc.

The latest .NET Frameworks, Visual C++ Runtimes, etc. can be downloaded when needed.

Also, I'm the only one using my PC. And security is 99% user dependent.

It all depends on the user really. It's very rare i get any type of virus or malware same as eldon.I don't have windows updates completely off.I set mine to manual. On both my desktop and laptop.

I very rarely have issues with malware and only run malwarebytes when i become infected.

It all depends on what you download and try to install any more.

You can setup your windows update to manual settings in services. And if you feel the need to update than just click update.

It's hardly surprising plodr, if that's the sort of view of Win 10 you are following, that you won't use it. It's not a scene I can relate to in any way at all. The simple discipline of monthly imaging is all you need in order to be able to duck out of problems caused by MS updates. I've only had an issue with 1809, as have many others, but by restoring 1803 (10 minutes) and by setting a 90 day update deferral until it was clear the problems had been resolved, I was fully functional again in no time, and that was the case with three separate Win 10 systems. Woody's solution is completely impractical and unnecessary.

Same i tried a while ago to install 1809 update fresh install. And it gave me more problems then any thing.

Poldr i don't blame you at all.I would rather run windows 7.Than run windows 10.Windows 10 in my opinion has been a mess up since day one.And i for one think it's starting to be worse than windows ME.

Thanks so much for all the feedback/links  and i hope majorgeeks archives member-threads for a long time, so that i can retroactively reference this post via User CP...
    • Earthling, does Win-10 enable automatic monthly imaging?

    • wile e coyote, how on earth are average users to know which updates are important or not even if they set it to manual (or some such)?

    • plodr, what's the diff. if you don't keep getting Win7 patches? Why the need to bail out of Windows toward Linux? After all, people seem to be fine by disabling Win7 updates?
Now for some back ground explanation re: my Qs:

See perhaps i'd have switched to Linux long ago, if it weren't for the fact that i'm quick becoming broke, and that's an understatement... (exorbitant local taxes, yada)

...which is why i'd signed onto Optimum Basic (slowest internet speed)
......upon which piggybacks MagicJack - which is not compatible with Linux
............and which is my phone service, as i wish to avoid google-voice.

...and thus, the Time-Guzzling-Win-10 might hijack me, due to slow internet speed.

But my plot thickens - because i'm still on XP, due to not knowing whether to get a Win7 system or Win10 system, but also because due to electrosensitivity, i'm nervous about both WiFi and WIDE screens.
(See, i had finally, finally, discovered that Lenovo 14"-15" XGA-Matte screens zap me least.

....But current screens are either tiny touchpads which would electrify my fingertips OR start at 15.4"WIDE which may overwhelm my eyes, thereby also killing me.
...they seem to overwhelm me in stores, though i can't know for sure until i'd try them at home. But i'm so weary of all the strikeouts i had in past until finally discovering the R52 thinkpad. So i'm leaning toward perhaps a T60, however obsolete it is.

    Or? perhaps a Lenovo ideapad??
...but i'm scared it might zap my health in some unanticipated way OR have some other unanticipated drawbacks such as non-compatibility with my old HP 1018 laser-printer and-furthermore be "overqualified" due to my very-slow internet speed.

If you are worried about driver issues with windows seven.I run Iobits Driver Booster 6 and find drivers that way.For both my desktop and laptop.

In all honesty i have all the windows 7 updates installed. And i don't have issues installing them.Unlike windows 10.

The computer is unpatched and might not be protected from all security threats. I prefer to keep our computers patched and up to date. I've always done this.

Thanks - when patches are supposed to stop in 2020, what will you switch to then?

Possibly a Chrome book for my husband or having him boot his laptop to a live linux stick. He mainly surfs so as long as I point him to the browser, he is good to go.

For me, my android 10.1" tablet. I have a bluetooth keyboard I use if I have to type a lot. The leather case allows me to use in landscape or portrait mode. I use portrait to read and landscape to surf and watch movies.

Since you use Android & bluetooth, i take it that WiFi / wireless is no health-concern for you & most others, for that matter?

If so, i'm in big trouble (if you've seen my above post.

My husband and I are in our 70's. We've been using wifi since June 2004 when I bought my first router.

He is on his 2nd pacemaker (his heart slowed downed below 25) and ends up seeing his cardiologist about every 6 - 9 months because there aren't any cardiac problems so clearly we don't have health issues with using wifi for over 14 years.

Some people are more tuned into this stuff then others. The effects of wifi can effect heart rate and other stuff.
I did a post a while back about how wifi signals effect the workers that install cell phone towers. Some get even burns from this stuff. But that is only around higher grade towers like cell phones and power lines.

It's all about your tolerance level. Some people like me have a higher tolerance level and will hardly feel the effects. But unless you spend hours and hours sitting around your modem all day long. There should be very little effect.

There are some individuals who are hypersensitive to EMF radiation.

If you want a good read here is a link on wifi effects.

It's all a huge mystery, as to why there's such varying tolerance levels. I'm terrified to take chances, since as it is, i cannot tolerate large LCD screens (haven't tried LED ones yet)...
...and also have found high-ghz computers intolerable (possibly higher than 1.8ghz)
...and also cannot tolerate RF frequencies of old-fashioned radio.

For all i know, even the wired router+modem in this room may be zapping me too.

And FYI, i myself used to think i'm tolerant. Many people think that until the point-of-no-return.
...i've seen a youtube video where a white-haired guy was saying that for many many years he'd been using his cellphone with no problems. Then one day he suddenly heard a LOUD POPPING NOISE in his ear, and from then on, became very electrosensitive.

And many years prior to his video, i'd read an online-testimonial by a woman who said the same exact thing that guy said.

Coincidence that they both had the same experience? No way.
And that's why i'm terrified of these most-cited EMFs, because i read that if people get zapped by one frequency, they can be susceptible to others as well. I'm not seeking extra problems, but what should i do if technocracy is descending on me, who's satisfied with the status quo?

Eldon thanks! I've never seen that before, and find those brain pics. very interesting.

While it makes sense (since i've been prone to severe migraines for a long time, and am on Neurontin)...
...yet don't expect the health system to make sense by acknowledging same.
...because then they'd be expected to shell out more disability, which they'd rather spend on providing what they deem to be in vogue and/or politically correct.

Trust me, there's been zillions of innovations which have been suppressed on these shores. For example, get a load of the below. I somehow doubt it would ever be acknowledged as a legit. test in the US...

P.S. With respect to my O.P., has anyone heard of MS Polaris, or know if Polaris would be usable on a Win7 system?

I.E. if you have a Win7 COA, would you then be able to download Polaris as a light version of Win-10 - and would it be worthwhile?

    I doubt it.
And you should start a new thread - this one has already gone off-topic.

Here is info on this subject https://www.zdnet.com/article/what-is-microsofts-polaris-project/

But any way we are getting a little off topic on the subject .

OK, sorry about that, so consider this topic closed. Thanks for the zdnet article (albeit over my head), but i read through the lines, and still wish there'd be a downloadable light version of Win-10. They seem to deliberately shove bells & whistles at people with basic-preferences some of whom still exist!
