im going to start building my own computer and im getting alot of input from other people. one conflicting thing is over the processor. some say that the intel pentium 4 with hyper technology is better than the amd 64 fx-55. if anyone knows which one is really better i would be truely grateful.

also if anyone knows what the difference between the amd opteron and the 64 fx-55 that would be great to. thanks for your help

Yeah like Earp said expensive unless you just have too have an fx i would go just a regular 64 chip winchester core or you could wait for the new cores to come out should be for sale sometime this month they are called venice.

It definatly depends on what you want to do with your computer. However to offer my opinion on the 64-bit processor's that are out there. I am a big AMD fan that's for sure. However, I don't think ANY 64-bit processor is worth buying for another 6 or so months for a couple of reasons. My biggest reasons is because if you are using windows until project longhorn is released as an OS you will be running your 64-bit processor on 32-bits anyways. Kinda like having a 69' Mustang muscle car and only doing city driving. It'll do a damn good job... but your still not fully utilizing it therefore pay way to much for processing that could be done the same much cheaper. My second reason does not weigh in nearly as heavy and that's just it's a brand new technology and needs a little time to mature and the price to come down. Now if you were running linux where 64-bit processors ARE supported than by all means go with a 64 whether it be intel or AMD. My advice at this point in time is to just get a really good 32-bit processor until microsoft releases project longhorn (if you are a windows user) and then when an OS designed for a 64-bit processor comes out then start looking into upgrading to match and by that point the prices will come down on the 64-bit processors

I believe SUN also released a 64 bit OS.. I can't remember. Anyways, for general usage, I personally favor the AMD line.. If you want a chip for video editing/etc ( the only real reason i see to use Intels ), go for the p4. However, the p4 with HT technology SUCKS at video gaming. I have an amd xp 3200+ and it runs better than the p4. Most geeks will tell you the same thing: AMD's are better than intels. ( Least the ones I talk to ).

Another AMD fan all the way, I've had both and will never buy another Pentium as long as AMD is around. I also favor ASUS mainboards because they work well together. I would definitely follow Mblock's advice too! just my $.02, we welcome yours ;)
