I would like to find out what items need to be checked in msconfig
to start up when my windows xp professional laptop boots up. It takes so long. Ive already run superantispyware, malwarebytes, and COMODO antivirus programs.
I have the COMODO firewall installed

    Hi

Personally and in tech circles we do not advocate using msconfig to manage startups, use something like StartupCPL to do this for a few reasons and they are HERE.

as for what you need, its a wide question as we do not know all your start-ups as each PC is different and with different software, so do follow the below exactly as written and attach the start-up log and we can advise as to what's needed and not.

If you believe you have malware then you will need to run the below as written.

I agree completely w/DavidGP... I actually used Mike Lin's StartupCPL for quite a while w/Win 98, 2000 and XP. When it first came out it was really sort of a revolutionary first-of-its-kind tool and was such a relief to use; rather than haphazardly fiddling around w/MSCONFIG in order to configure which programs run when your computer starts... Great tool, really but unfortunately; as far as I know, StartupCPL has not been updated since 2004. Currently there are numerous similar intentioned freeware apps out there that do a far better job of managing start-up programs IMO; such as CodeStuff Starter, Sysinternals Autoruns for Windows as well as the Startup Manager Module option that comes with the Glary Utilities freeware suite.

The CodeStuff Starter tool and the Glary Utilities 'Startup Manager Module' are very easy to use and both of these have some fairly basic configuration options that StartupCPL currently lacks. If anyone wants to try them out those two are much better for 'beginners', I believe. Autoruns for Windows is a great utility program; however it can be a bit tricky and even overwhelming (for those users who may be new at trying out start-up management apps); mostly because it lists so many different options.

Side Note: Additionally, the Sysinternals main website also has some very useful (yet tiny) programs such as Process Explorer, Process Monitor, PsTools, PageDefrag, RootkitRevealer, TcpView, BgInfo, and Desktops utility apps available on their site, as well.

    Good Luck -- COMP
