I'm looking for decent 5.1 surround sound system for the TV so I just wondered what everyone else has,I don't have a lot to spend so been looking at something like this-

I don't need a DVD player and I don't mind buying separate speakers and amp,the most important thing is it must have a digital optical input as its the only way to connect my TV in 5.1 hence I can't get the SONY above as it doesn't have one,I don't mind paying a bit more,no more than £300/$600.

My exact setup! LOL It's a classic!

I like logitech products also, Rikky - had good luck with them. However, I think that Sony DAV-DZ280 in your first post looks nice (I like Sony sound products also). Never actually seen that model in operation, though . . .

Rikky, I have had good luck just throwing things together, you should be able to buy components seperately, and make your system whatever you want.

Mine for example is a 500 watt Yamaha receiver, which I need to update to an HD receiver... and my 5 main Speakers are Pinoneer from an old shelf stereo my parents didn't want any more. The two cabinet speakers each have a 12" subwoofer, a midrange speaker & a tweeter.. and the surround & center channels are each probably a 4" speaker. For added depth, the speaker on the far right is a 180 watt powered Sony 12" subwoofer.

It's not the best, but it'll rattle my porch lights if I want it to. I just re-wired it last night with Monster wire.. even at low volume, you don't really miss a sound.

Being that the main speakers where free.. I have about $350 in the whole system.. I just replaced the sub, and that was $212. I expect a new receiver to be close to the same though..

I have enough stuff to build something like that right now Paxton, the problem is the SONY TV I have only has a digital optical out for 5.1,I could hook five speakers into the left and right outputs but it would only be stereo through five speakers, what I'm aiming for is to hear sounds travelling left to right and front to back in five channel encoded media.

I know what you mean. I have 5.1 set up.. I'm going to remodel the room, so I haven't done the wiring to the back channels yet, I have them sitting on top of the bigger speakers.. My receiver has a digital input... But I have satellite TV, which has its own outputs. I have them running into the receiver, so that I can hear it in surround sound (speaker location pending)

I have my PS3 hooked up to the HDMI on the TV, and I don't have it on the surround system yet, but when I upgrade the receiver, I'm going to get HDMI for everything, then I'll take the time to place the speakers and drywall the room. ;)

We have about 4 sets of speakers around the house. But what I want is to be able to go wireless. Place isn't set up for surround sound, unless I want to go drill holes in the floor, which I don't want to do right now.

I hate wireless stuff,to me wireless just means battery operated so sooner or later you have to take wireless speakers down to charge, the higher you have the volume the more often you have to take them down.

I run wires along skirting boards and pin them to it I dunno if you have them over there..

What I want is the TV as the audio hub so everything that goes through the TV is played over the speakers,I could hook a DVD player to 5.1 right now but then terrestrial TV and audio from from the PC I have connected would only be in stereo through the TV.

It really is a PITA and is SONY's fault for not including component 5.1 outputs on the TV.

I'm just playing around ATM but I have my laptop connected through HDMI running all my media through the TV,I think I'm peeing into the wind though as I've just read this

    http://www.digitaltrends.com/talk-backs/hdmi-falls-short-on-audio-for-now/

First I've heard 5mins ago that HDMI isn't 5.1,well what's the freaking point:confused my laptop only has stereo output other than the HDMI output,it looks like I'll have to use a full sized PC and send the audio straight to an amp.

I'll have to find out more do more reading, specifically if my TV down tunes 5.1 to stereo after it passes through and if my laptop is even putting out 5.1 over the HDMI in the first place, which now I'm doubting.

Talk about wind out of my sails:(Anyone who can clear this up is welcome to butt in.

Bluray through HDMI is 7.1.. HDMI provides HD audio.... But 5.1? Not sure, but Ibet it is (at least). Good luck.

My subwoofer weighs 40 pounds & hits hard enough to walk across the floor. :cool

Yes, Rikky, we have "base" boards, but also doors too. So I am more interested in wireless, even for going to computer to tv. Want to lend me a few bucks?

You can definitely do that. My panasonic has 3 hdmi ports which I run all my stuff through and has an coaxial output which I run to my Onkyo reciever. Although if you want HD surround 7.1 you'll need an HDMi out, or a reciever with hdmi

Even if I followed in your footsteps, Rikky, it won't solve my wireless desires. :-D:-D

There's the problem with my SONY Bravia it doesn't have coaxial outputs,it has coaxial input but only stereo output,I've only just got the TV so you may be able to use the inputs as outputs but I doubt it.

But that's good to know you use HDMI for surround sound so thanks.
