Whining noise

Happy to say I just got some new memory for my computer and it is working faster.

I had hoped that when I increased the memory the whining would have stopped but it didn't. The whining is most noticable when I am playing graphics-intensive games or if I hit a website that has a lot of flash applications.

I recently reinstalled the system and now the whining takes place at boot-up and does not stop until the computer loads the ethernet connection.

Another thing that happened today which I don't understand. After installing the memory, the computer would no longer recognize the mouse that was running fine when I shut down the computer to install the memory.

I had another mouse and tried that one, it also used to work just fine. A friend let me use his mouse and it works. Just coincidence?

Also, there is no power to the cd rom drive after the install. I am thinking this is just because a connection was knocked loose during the memory install.

But, what about that whining? Fan or hard drive?

This is an old computer. HP d330 ut Business Desktop circa 2002 - 2003.

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 GHz now with 1.5 GB RAM.

    Only you can answer that.
Take the side off, check for loose wires (mouse and CD problems) boot up with the side off and with an empty paper towel you should be able to move around the inside of the computer and isolate the whining noise. It could be hard drive, optical drive, case fan, graphics card fan or power supply fan.

Did you clean out any dust when you had the case open, especially the CPU heatsink (and graphics card heatsink if equipped)? Your cooling fans will speed up, possibly making more noise, at boot time and when programs like games run because your computer works harder and generates more heat as a result. Dust covering these heatsinks will hold in heat, forcing those fans to spin faster to remove it.

It might be tha the berring in the fan needs lubricated..cause of age the lubricant may have dried out ( I've had this problem recently)
All you would need is a single drop of some sewing machine oil or 3 in 1 household oil.

If you follow these instructions it should be an very easily fixed problem
    Hope this helps :)

Interesting. I am new to going inside the box so I don't really know about this stuff. I wish my brother was still talking to me. :cry:confused

I will give your suggestion a try.

The inside of the box was extremely dusty. I tried to pull some of the dust away but I know I need to go buy one of those air cans, right?

I have run a program to check the computer and it said something about the temperature being *good* at 97 degrees. It was considered *good* because it was under 100 degrees.

plodr means the inner cardboard tube the paper towels are rolled up on. It acts as a stethoscope when you hold up 1 end to your ear and move it around to find the whining with the side off the computer.

Yes, get air in a can to remove the dust. Do not use a vacuum cleaner inside the PC.

Yup, one of the best tech tips I've ever seen for a home user, even a tech. If the paper is still on it'll still help and feel fuzzy too.;):-D
