Is there a way to set the order programs start after xp is running?
My AV seems to be at or near the bottom of the list and my firewall traffic monitor shows traffic in and out before it is up and running.

XP assigns the order at random?
    Anybody else?
I am not going to spend $40 on a maybe.

You can try using your system configuration utility....
Navigate...start>run, type in msconfig.exe, then hit enter...select start up tab!

I think that Plaphon probably means TweakUI, which is free. I have it installed on my machine, and after a quick look, I can't see anything of the sort. MSCONFIG doesn't provide options to change the order, either.

We will need to know what firewall and AV you use, as most F/Ws start as services, while your AV is likely just a startup program.

CCleaner has an excellent startup manager and will tell you what startup programs there are for the current user. See if both your F/W and AV are listed here, and let us know. We can probably change the order these programs startup in by changing the order they are listed in the registry.

edit: actually, after some thought, this is likely a good thing! AV apps only detect viruses when a scan is run, or if you have real-time protection, when you try to open an infected file, email or website. Since this is the case, it is best that your firewall is on first! (To stop worms from propagating to your machine in the first place!)

Tweak XP has an option to set the startup in alphabetical order which I do not want to do,msconfig does not offer an order option.

Mada_Milty, I have been using MRU Blaster but must say that I like CCleaner much better.
    Thanks for the tip
I use Zone Alarm Pro and Norton AV 06.
    The NAV scans everything.

    Okay two questions now:

    1. Do we still want to change the startup order, considering the addition I made to my post?

    2. If so, did either of these apps appear in the startup list? IIRC, NAV will start as a service, and I know that ZA does, so we may be SOL.

On the start up list I have:
    Zone Labs Client C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zclient.exe
    Symantec NetDriver Monitor C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SYDMon.exe/Consumer
    ccApp C:\ProgramFile\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe

    Symantec = Norton

Run them both. MRU Blaster finds lots of lists that CCleaner misses.

I run 4 programs, with MRU last, and it always finds stuff the other 3 miss. Bazza

There is a freeware program that you might find useful for this purpose which is called Startup Delayer. After installation, the program allows users to specify which programs to start first and which ones to delay. Users can set a "custom delay" for each program, and even drag the visual display graph which shows you exactly how your programs are starting and allows you to fairly easily modify the order or adjust delay times.

Important Note: This program can be very useful; however it needs to be configured properly in order to function correctly. Therefore, a thorough read of the help files is necessary in order to learn how to use it properly and without any problems in order to get the most out of it.

Also, you might have to try a few different start up order sequence combinations; because Windows can sometimes be a little touchy when you change the start-up order, causing a much longer start-up time and/or cause some programs to either not function correctly or even cause your computer to crash afterwards.

    Good Luck!
