I'll be your backup with 79 invites :)

You know, the good thing about these periodic threads is that it reminds me to check my gmail account, which is practically useless to me since I have to go to the gmail site to check it (unless I want to go through the hassle of forwarding all my gmail to my inbox). If they'd make it POP accessible, I'd be a happy camper.

Oh...and I've got 5 invites still...apparently if you've only had seven emails in the entire eight months you've had an account, they don't give you the huge number of them. :D

    Edit:
Hmmmmm....can it really be true? They offer POP now? I'll have to see if it's real this time, as opposed to last time when they said it was POP, but in reality it was forwarding...

I tried it out with Outlook and it was crap, just, as you say, forwarding.

Supposedly, it's POP now. But I tried for about 20 minutes to get it to work (following their instructions to the letter), and it doesn't. Keeps giving me an error message that there's problems connecting to the server. And when I check in my gmail settings, the option to always use POP is default disabled no matter how many times I enable it and check "save settings".

    Still crap.

Meh, I don't care that much. I hardly ever use it, and only got it because I figured having a throwaway email addy with unlimited storage wasn't a bad thing. :D

My POP access works fine. I have it set to send it to Outlook, and keep a copy on their server.

What are the POP and SMTP server names?

I have 50 invites left, and all mail is forwarded to my linux/virus filter/spam kill acct.

I spoof the reply from dialup to have the reply send back to the linux acct. Since I spoof the mail for reply to settings, the spam filter at work zots my mail. So I used Gmail to send links I want to forward to coworkers.

It would be interesting to config POP in thunderbird for Gmail though....

    pop.gmail.com
    smtp.gmail.com

There are other settings, too, and you have to enable it from the web interface first, as well.

If it'll let you. I tried again when I got home this evening, and every time I leave the screen and come back to it, it's disabled. Seems they don't want me to use POP.

What if you logout, delete the gmail cookie, then login and try to enable it?

The cookie may be blocking the change.

And I may be entirely wrong also!

That did it for changing the default. But apparently I'm not supposed to be using OE. *sigh* OE works with my main account, my secondary account, two hotmail accounts, and two other accounts from other web sites, but not gmail.

Oh well. I never use that account anyway. The last one before my test email was something I emailed myself six weeks ago, and before that was from March. :D

    ROLFMAO!!!

    User error - replace user.

Where's that "whapping myself on the forehead with the heel of my hand" icon when I need it? You have to enter your entire email address as your user name.

    Works now.

hrmmm...I've been using pop access for gmail since they started offering it several months ago....have never had a problem and I have 8 accounts. For those that need it:

They offer a tool for setting it up or you can do it manually (my preference) (Go to Tools > Accounts > Mail > Properties) the big thing is to remember to change the ports...rather than the default ports of 25 and 110 (under the Advanced tab) you have to use ports 465 & 995 along with making sure the boxes under both port settings for 'This server requires a secure connection' are checked. Every time I have initially set up the ports, 465 reverts to 25 the first time I re-open OE...switching it back to 465 and applying it again has kept the setting thus far. Also under the Servers tab the last check box for 'My server requires authentication' needs to be checked. Don't forget to enable pop mail via your web-based gmail account or it won't work.:)

I have 397 *thud* invites if anyone still needs one PM me.

    Have you tried Thunderbird?

I will never go back to OE. ;)

Ya know Boom...I tried Thunderbird, more than once as a matter of fact. Thought it was pretty kewl at first...then I noticed it was killing my resources and I also wasn't able to have message rules like I can with OE. For example: Mail from various sources that comes in I have set to automatically display in bold font using various colors. For example my MG account. Reported posts are RED, new threads in the mod forum are BLUE, etc. Also I found sorting mail so it automatically goes into a certain folder when downloaded, while supported in Thunderbird, was easier to manage with OE.

There were some other things that I wasn't able to tweak or use to my satisfaction so my mail was easier to manage...I can't remember what the others were off the top of my head.

I have, and didn't like it for many of the same reasons as AbbySue. It's nice, if all you're going to do is check one email account and you don't want to separate it into folders. I've got too many accounts for too many different reasons to deal with Thunderbird.

S'ok now, I got the gmail POP working. And I'm still looking for the icon. :D

I have discovered that gmail does NOT like it if you have your email client set to check for new mail every 3 minutes. LOL! I can't help it if that's how it has to be for the majority of my accounts. :D

    Dear Sleepygamer213,
I attempted to PM you about your gmail offer, but received a message back that you had "elected not to receive Private Messages."

I hope this is not breaking any forum rules, but if you have any more invites for gmail, I certainly would like to try it.
    Thanks,
    Mishkyn

Speaking of Gmail, my account has not worked in three days. It says Server Error. My wife can get her gmail with no problem on the same computer.

I hope they get things working again, I'm not the only one with a bad account.

It is still technically beta, so I really can't complain much. But, it would be nice if they had some sort of status page where you can read about downtime and such.
